I've been called worse!  It sure was fun trying to explain to my co-workers though. I got quite a few comments today at work on the Genesis. Most seemed to be shocked that it was a Hyundai. Another said he's seen these cars around town quite a bit (not sure what he was talking about, I just nodded politely and said "is that so?").
*

Perhaps he meant he has seen a lot of Hyundais around? If that is the case, then he very well might have been right!

No he actually said he saw my same car. It was his response to me telling him that they just came out and most dealerships don't have them yet. He's a nice enough guy, but he's the type of person that always knows everything if you get my drift.

The sticker says 18/26. My mileage has now dropped below 22mpg according to the computer. I guess it's my "spirited" driving. I'll keep you all posted on the fuel economy once the miles rack up. In my experience engines typically attain their best fuel economy after the first or second oil change.

I will be sure to post more pics in a week or two once I get the windows tinted and put on the Genesis wing emblems.

Thanks for posting the gas mileage. 18/26 seems fairly good for that size car. It will look very good with your windows tinted and those emblems are amazing.

Hahaha, I do catch the drift - the thinly veiled jealousy manifested as "been there done that, seen it around"... ahh well. Enjoy it. You'll have a few more months of the total exclusivity, at the rate Hyundai is cranking out the Genesis... and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods, this "U.S.A." of which you speak, I'll gladly jealously fawn over the car, then go for a ride in it...

QUOTE(andyman32 @ Jun 30 2008, 07:20 PM)
Blast!!! No Genesis for Raleigh until ***AUGUST***.

I guess a "near-luxury" luxury car with a strong value-conscious target demographic just doesn't make sense to release here... I guess that kind of buyer doesn't exist in this provincial little ville. Why, we even had a ticker-tape parade in downtown the first time someone ever brought a S-class inside city limits... late last year... that is, after we convinced the old folk that it wasn't a German space ship. Oh well. Looks like Genesis test drive will be in 2 months for me. :( </Eeyore doldrums>
*

Just noticed on autotrader that a dealer in Rocky Mount, a small town 50 miles east of Raleigh in the coastal flatlands, has at least one Genesis in stock. My dealership said "we won't get any until at least August" but wouldn't elaborate exactly when in August, or why the delay. I think someone missed the boat on dealer allocations. Ignored the corporate memo on the fax machine one morning. In fact, the salesman I talked to barely knew what Genesis was, so he had to find someone "who is familiar with that account". This other guy didn't even believe me, that someone had already purchased a Genesis on the west coast. They all started talking to each other, like, "oh crap, we should have been paying attention..." This is inexcusable.

Man, come on Hyundai... their regional people need to keep the local dealers better appraised of the situation. And if the dealer is lazy, shove it down their throats. I get the sense Genesis sales in Raleigh are going to be abysmal. This metro area is around 1.3 million. Rocky Mount is 50k people. There's no excuse for not bringing a few early Genesis' into this area. I'm so disappointed that this dealership is asleep at the wheel... (IMG:http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/mad/mad0039.gif)

Just a few random updates/comments:

-The door panels/center armrest could be a bit softer. They look "soft", but only have a small amount of padding underneath the leather. This was one of my main complaints about the interior of my GS430.

-Visibility out the back is pretty limited, much more so than the Azera. I definitely have gotten accustomed to having a review camera and will miss that (darn Hyundai for making the NAV part of a $4k package)

-The audio system is great! I love the sound quality and the clarity. I'm still messing around w/ the EQ to get the best sound, but even when cranked up there is very little distortion.

-I purchased a new Navigon 2100Max portable Nav system. I decided to give Navigon a try in spite of the somewhat average reviews. After fiddling with the settings a bit I am quite happy with it. The mounting bracket could be better, but the graphics and accuracy seem pretty good so far. The mapping is very up to date, at least in my area. I love the 3D View which is similar to the Birds Eye View on Nissan/Infiniti Nav systems, which coincidentally also use Zenrin software.

-My KDM Genesis wing badges should be here by tomorrow and I got the windows tinted on Wednesday (35% all around).....get ready for a few more pics! ;)

-I got my iPod connector cable from my local Hyundai parts department yesterday ($26). Once it's synced up (5-10 seconds) it shows the artist & song name on the radio display and an "H" logo on the iPod. I wish the manual was more detailed in telling me that I needed a special Hyundai cable.....it could have saved me some trouble by having to scour the internet for more information.

-Speaking of the manual, the information contained within is lacking detail in places, and is just plain confusing in others. For instance, I've been thinking lately about octane ratings. I know the V8 was designed to run on either Regular or Premium, but will get more performance (HP/TQ) by using Premium. What about the V6? We know it can get approx. 310hp when tuned properly (e.g. Genesis Coupe), but we don't know yet if that is because of a higher compression ratio, more free-flowing exhaust, or if it only gets those numbers by running on Premium Unleaded fuel.

In the brochure, this is what it says about fuel requirements for the 3.8l V6:

"Your new vehicle is designed to use only unleaded fuel having a pump octane number ((R+M)/2) of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher."

What does that mean exactly, I wonder. Will this engine produce more power on Premium? I mean, it makes some sense that if it does indeed make more power on Premium that Hyundai wouldn't advertise the fact. It's already more powerful than most of it's V6 competition and I'm sure they want to keep as much difference in advertised HP/TQ between the V6 and V8 as possible. I guess the only way to know for sure if higher octane fuel has any effect on performance is to put it on a dyno.

Interesting question about HP in the V6. Man is there ever a longstanding, raging debate about whether premium helps at all. Some insist that it WILL add a percentage point of power to any car, some say (myself included in this group) it may burn SLIGHTLY cleaner and keep the injectors clearer for longer, some say it does nothing at all either way, some say it actually reduces performance in some modern engines that are tuned for a certain injector flow, spray pattern, and combustion timing. I have read passionate articles and blogs on all sides of the fray. :)

Honestly, as fuel gets more expensive, the premium you pay for premium fuel actually represents a smaller percentage increase over the 'base price'. A year ago when regular was $2.95/gal, a $0.20 surcharge represented a 6.7% premium over regular gas to feed the car the top-shelf stuff. Now, with $4.10 regular, that $0.20 surcharge only represents a 4.8% premium. Most folks feel the pain of the $4 gallons; I think, it's actually less of a penalty relative to base operating costs of the car now than it was before. So I get premium.

You could do some tests without a dyno... get it bone-dry, fill it up with 91 or 93, dump in two bottles of octane, and see if it goes a **** of a lot faster, or sputters and explodes.

Nice looking car! I actually saw one at my dealer today while getting my Sonata serviced... very nice! I was actually surprised by how much more I liked the car after seeing it in person! In any case, as much as I like the car, I'm still not sure if I'd be willing to purchase this over an Audi A4, Lexus IS, Cadillac CTS, etc... There's a lot of competition out there for a car in this price range.

After owning an 06 Hyundai for 2-1/2 years, and watching other owners closely, I would trust the Genesis more than the Caddy or the Audi. The new Caddy's I've ridden in lately have lots of squeeks and rattles. Audi, well, their reliability just isn't in the ballpark with Genesis and Lexus.

To JWaters: Let me be the last to congratulate you and hate on you for buying that Genesis. Prostatitis to you!

More pics as promised. The wing badges were a bit of a pain to put on. They had large plastic tabs that had to be shaved off with a Dremmel tool and unless viewed straight on they tend to look crooked (I measured each side to be safe).

Anyway, enjoy! I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! :)

Jwaters All I can say is wow! Truly awesome pics! Great looking ride. Those Genesis badges make the car stand out even more!

I also like the Navigon 2100, read up about it some and it seems to be a very competent system. Also liked how you lined it up to sit over the radio...and your Ipod selection, "A pain that I'm Used to". lol.

Hyundai is kiddin' themselves thinking that the Genesis "badge" doesn't belong on this car! I have read most, if not all your post on this forum and another as well, regarding your ownership experience and being one of the coveted few who have Genesis ownership.

Tell me, are you planning on updating your driving impressions of the car sometime soon? I would be very interested in learning about your short term, long term impression of the ride, handling, driving dynamics, day-to-day and whatever else you can share.

Thanks for posting these latest snaps. If you can do updates, this would be great! ****! You've really got a smart looking ride!

I'll be sure to do follow-ups down the road. I was planning on doing one at 500 miles, one after the first service, and then sporadically thereafter (mainly whenever I take a long road trip).

Those badges look great! Where they difficult to put on (position/align)? What type of glue did you use? Have you considered removing the "Genesis" name in the lower right corner of the trunk so that you only have the winged badge in the back?

Thanks for posting the latest photos with the "wing" badge. I, for one, would remove the paper dealer plates and frames on your front & rear, unless of course they are paying you ADV. Ditto Genesis on the right bottom trunk lid.

Let's hope the Hyundai US police don't bust your ride for violations of "official" badging beyond China & Korea distribution.

No, no, it just says that because the gasoline sold as 87 octane in the USA can also be rated at 91 octane using a different rating system that's more common in other countries. In the USA the number you see on pumps is the "Pump Octane Number", whereas in many other countries you see the "Research Octane Number".

Anyways, a PON of 87 is equal to an RON of 91, so that's all your manual means. If you look carefully on pump stickers they sometimes also show the Research Octane Number on it somewhere.

And yes I actually registered just to post this, even though I do not own a Hyundai at all.
