My 01 Tiburon used to do that. I could push the clutch in, and it wouldn't go into reverse. I would have to fully let out on the clutch and push it back in again, and then it would go into reverse just fine.

<sigh> I wish my SE was a 5 speed. The way this automatic can't decide if it wants to be in 3rd or 4th is really starting to try my patience. I've begun to really give the OD button a workout lately.

So yeah, my vote would be manual transmission, all the way.

Yes!! thank you! I tried the "push the clutch down, then wait, then let off, and then push it back down again, and going into reverse is SUPER smooth!!! Just a weird accent 'thing' i guess. Whatever works!!!!

Its called double clutching... Reverse is probably not a synchronized gear. People used to have to do that with every shift before they started putting synchros in manual transmissions.

Get a car with CVT tranny. All auto-tranny-hunting for a gear comes to an end.

I've had auto transmission cars before this, including a 2002 Focus that had about the same HP as this car, but the Accent seems to "hunt" worse than any other car I've had.

Check out the Wikipedia article on the technique. And be glad that transmission technology has come a long way
