New to Forum. I own a 2007 Hyundai Sonata V6. I've owned the car almost 1 yr but only have 5000 miles. The other day I noticed the bumper paint is peeling along the seam of the rear bumper on both sides. Told by manager this is something I did...of course not possible. There are no scratch marks on car. Plus the passenger seat belt light is pushed in on dash. Again I was told I did and wouldn't be covered under warranty. Frustrated. Has anyone else had paint issues. I did file a BBB report.

well, the paint used isnt exactly the best paint out there.. others have had paint issues as well.. i havent had any other than a few scratches here and there, but that is normal wear...

what you should do is take pics of the peeling paint and post them in here (as well as the pushed in seatbelt light - which i cannot understand how that got pushed in without you actually hitting it or something to be fair to the dealer on that one)

anyway, :00000732: and this place is a great tool for questions about the car!

meg,

Have another dealer look at it. There's no reason why the paint should peel off like that.

Just this morning as I was waiting for my bus, there was a Sonata that passed by - a quarter of the bumper's paint had already peeled off. Really nasty looking.

I plan on taking the car to another dealer. Hopefully, they will have a better explanation to why the paint is peeling. The service manager said I
"pried" something along the bumper seam. Yes, I like to intentionally destroy my new car I'm still making payments on. About the passenger seat belt light which was slightly pushed into the dash could be because of the weather here in Phoenix...115 degrees. Maybe when it was assembled the light wasn't put in tight enough...again I'm not going to hit the light and damage the car.

You would be amazed at the level of service you get from one dealer to another. The paint on the bumper is no-brainer. Unless they can prove that you drove the car through a 100 MPH sandstorm, they MUST fix it under warranty

As for the seatbelt light, again unless they can prove that you whacked that thing inwards, they should fix it.

Don't let the dealer tell you it is your fault. Last year at the port I work at we had to have about one third of the sonatas fixed for the paint peeling at the rear bumper seams. It is a known defect

I would not always think so. The Sonata comes with a 'limited' Warranty.

In the first Year any 'adjustments' are covered. If you break an item that

has not failed do to a manufactures defect, I would not automatically expect

Warranty coverage? And remember Paint is only covered for 3 yrs/36,000 Miles

the other question is, was the passenger seat belt light pushed in when you got the car?

I would make sure the car is clean before going to a dealer, show them that you take care of the car and insist that it gets looked at by a hyundai service rep. The dealer isn't the one that makes the decision as to whether something is covered by warranty (if I have my facts straight). Insist that it gets looked at. To me if its not from a scratch, and the paint is peeling, its almost taken for granted that it should be covered under warranty. Good luck!

As far as the passenger seat light, can't really make the call without seeing pics.

I don't know where you live but I would go through your local state business regulation department. It varies from state-to-state as far as who is over automobile dealerships, but you're sure to have one. If you want help finding out who it is just PM me with where you live.

The BBB is a good place to start but your local state office Will get results if you're in the right, which I believe you are. Dealers can thumb their nose at the BBB if they want to, but with the state they don't have that luxury since the state is who gives them the license to do business within the state. Trust me, dealerships will go above and beyond once the state gets involved. Food for thought.

The service I received from another dealer was amazing. I expressed my concerns they said fine let me have our technician look at it. The tech came back an hour later, he fixed the seat belt passenger light and the bumper paint peeling is definitely a defect. I need to bring the car back when the paint person works.
I can't believe the customer service was so different. Glad I decided to take to another dealer..

That's great that you got it resolved. Its irritating that you get such different service at different dealerships, but at least you know where to take it from now on

Agreed ! I would give the new dealer a special "kudos" and let the old one know where you'll be sending anyone that interested in a new Hyundai.
