Hi everybody,
I was hoping someone may have insight on a problem I just encountered with my 2008 Elantra GLS. I bought it almost 4 weeks ago with 4700 miles - it was being used as a loaner so I got a discount on it. It had a minor scratch and dent on it that the dealership agreed to pay for so I brought it in last Thursday to get that work done. I got my car back yesterday afternoon and now there is a squealing/whistling sort of noise happening when the car is at an idle in all gears. The noise can get to be quite whiny and annoying waiting at a long light. This was not happening before I brought it in for the scratch/dent - it had been wonderfully quiet. I really don't want to bring the car back to the dealership because I was bummed being without it this past weekend and don't want to lose it again. I hope it's one of those easy to fix issues. All the work done on it was bodywork so there was no reason for anyone to be under the hood, making this new noise even more puzzling. I perused the forum and didn't see anything that quite matched this issue, plus my Mac isn't cooperating with the hmaservice site. Any information would be very appreciated!

Just an update in case anyone else encounters a similar noise:
I finally got to the dealership today (had to wait for an appointment day where they had a loaner available) and they said the sound is due to the water pump, which has to be replaced. The service manager said something about taking off the belt, too, but the final point was that they were putting a new pump in. I wasn't really expecting that but as long as it's covered and fixes the problem, I'll be happy. Hopefully it will be ready for me tomorrow and in the meantime I get to drive a 2009 red Sonata :thumbsup:

Sorry, haven't been able to get on here since I got my car back! I got it back the day after I brought it in and the service manager said it was very strange that my water pump had to be replaced. Just my luck I guess! While picking up my car I saw a Genesis delivery, though, so that was a cool bonus :thumbsup:

Man I am not to happy hearing about all the water pumps going bad, worries me.
Is there a list yet on what vins are effected or what?

What did you get your car with 4700 miles on it for? price.

The car I bought was one of the dealership's loaners for a while so that is why it had some miles on it. I think I had around 7000 on it when the noise started. The service manager said my problem was very unusual so I'm not sure that this is something many people are affected by.

No, it is fairly common from what I have read on the net, go to the elantra xd dot com. its an elantra only site and they have a hd section, more then just a few cars effected.

new here....sorry I haven't introduced myself yet but I have an '07 elantra SE. 5800 miles and the water pump has gone......it's being replaced. Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
