So I am browsing CarDomain early this morning, you know just looking at cars and at times just being shell shocked at the ghastly things some people will do to their rides. In any case I ran across one page for a guy with a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. He claims his car makes 308HP on a HKS Single Turbo setup. I find that very hard to believe and I'm actually surprised no one has challenged him on his claim yet. I'm just wondering what others (who are more inclined about forced induction than I am) think of his claims. Is it really that possible to turbo charge a 4 cylinder engine and make more power than a v6? Since there really isn't an aftermarket for the i4, let alone the v6 I wouldn't think that would be possible. Even if someone could turbo charge the 4 cylinder I thought it would almost bring it close in power to the v6 not well over it.

Not to mention the link in his pictures goes to site that looks like it sells high end cars to people Asia.

What do you guys think?

That sounds about right. A higher turbo boost would have no problems getting well over 300hp from a 4 banger.

Having said that, I believe the stock ECU (computer) would have problems working with a turbo. Since nobody yet makes performance or programmable ECU's for the i4 or V6 Sonata, I don't know how a turbo could be made to work.

Yep he has it working, I believe it. ECU tunning ... that shouldn't be a problem, we are just scared to buy a piggy back and get it installed. There is a guy in town that could tune afrs etc on my car but I'm too broke.

That is totally within reason. You are looking at a 15% drivetrain loss...so he is probably testing 250 or so on the dyno...so his HP claims are probably estimated.

Small 4 cylinder turbos are a great option, My wife's old Volvo got great mileage and yet was a hoot to drive when you mashed the pedal down. If you can tolerate the lag...they make lots of really usable power.

Certainly possible and expensive. Kits from Alpine Developments cost upwards of $4,000.00.

Possible, and with a kit from a reputable manufacturer like HKS, not very difficult.

Heck, the Dodge Caliber uses the same basic engine design and produces 300 horsepower from it's turboed 2.4 "world engine".

Dodge has it tuned fairly conservatively too, for warrantee and liability reasons, guys are pushing big power from this engine.

That guy claiming 308 is also in Korea.... there is a "little" bit more aftermarket there. :P

Big power 4 cyls aren't uncommon... guys can pull 400 hp from 2 liter honda engines.
GM performance parts has pushed their 2.0 liter ecotec to 1000 hp, although that isn't a street engine any more, but it is proof pudding and race power.

Well is it not the same 5speed auto thats on the V6? if the guy was pushing 308 at the motor, I could see the tranny holding up. this is only 73hp more than the V6 which is not a huge power increase. I bet people have done it with nitrous. Has anyone checked out the website http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/ ? it came up when I ran the guy on Car Domains website bobaedreams.com.

Sir,

I can't open any ebay links because I'm at work but I'm pretty sure that it is one of those "CHIPS" stay away from it, it won't give you no HP etc... just trouble.

LOL, that's a squirrel cage fan - like the fan that's in our dash to blow air out the vents. Well, not exactly like ours, but it works the same way. Same principle as a turbo but "not quite" the same output.

But ... if nobody has seen it, there was a bunch of people playing around with a leaf blower on a stock Civic where they put the nozzle right into the intake tube and ran it on the dyno - picked up 10HP ! Then they did the same test and sprayed nitrous into the intake fan of the leaf blower and picked up about 50HP - at the wheels. Here's the video, they did a truck as well I think. Of course a leaf blower puts out a massive amount of air volume. Hmm, electric leaf blower and power inverter under the hood ...

Why don't you post and ask for a video and information yourself? :P

I dunno where you can buy tubros now tho... the last tubro dealer that I talked to closed down when the gsa prices went up and tubros went out of style.
If you mean turbo, then you might want to check out HKS' Japan or Korean sites and fire up your babelfish translator.
