Is there any way to make the trip computer show your current, real-time MPG instead of your average? I am trying to compare the effects of driving at different speeds, and it would be nice to be able to see exactly what I am getting at a given time (going up a hill or starting off, say), rather then having it average everything out.

Yes, but reset every several miles, or it will begin to average after a few miles. as you go.

That would be true if I was driving alone on a flat road. However, in normal driving, hills, traffic and other road conditions will effect the reading, causing the average to not reflect my true current MPG, even if I have reset it. Some of you mentioned external devices. Would these have to be proprietary, specialty devices, or is there a way I could connect my laptop to my cars computer?

I know it does when parked, but I doubt it shows the same thing if you reset it while driving?

Actually, you will have to drive .5 miles since reset to get the first reading. So, I would say it does reset to 0, then averages the mpg for the first .5 miles to show the first number on the display.

Something must have changed since 2006, since I get a reading before I'm out of the parking lot. It usually shows 2 to 3 mpg. :w00t:

QUOTE(oceanax13 @ Jun 23 2008, 04:38 PM) Real time M.P.G. doesn't make sense. My friend has a Pontiac G6, and when you floor it its realtime shows ur getting like 3 M.P.G. <--- (Not helpful data)
While it is true that real time MPG numbers often swing wildly, they are accurate. You really are getting 3 MPG when your floor the gas peddle, or 100+ coasting down a hill. While this alone is not very helpful, it is useful data which I would like to have available to me. Please see my prior question about connecting a laptop to my cars computer. I saw them do it on Mythbusters to measure MPG, so I know its possible, but what is required?

The Mythbusters used a device that attached to the fuel line and measured the flow of fuel, then calculated the MPG from that. Like you said it is definitely useful information, but I don't know what those devices are called, how much they cost or where you can get one.
