I have been gandering around at picking up a second Sonata. I stumbled on several now that state they are "Hyundai Certified Pre-owned". They list the original 10/100,00 as transferable.

Anyone know the deal on this?

I dont think I have ever seen a "certified car locally before.

"PRESS RELEASE:

HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES ENHANCED PRE-OWNED PROGRAM WITH AN INDUSTRY FIRST, 10 YEAR/100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIF., 05/30/2007 Hyundai Motor America today announced an industry first with its new Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, boasting a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty on used vehicles going back five model years with less than 60,000 miles. The enhanced pre-owned program and pre-owned warranty provides buyers with an added level of comfort and satisfaction with their vehicle purchase. The enhanced pre-owned program was launched to Hyundai dealers in May 2007, with warranty being effective from date of original sale. Hyundai's enhanced Certified Pre-Owned vehicle program will provide buyers with:

· Powertrain 10 year/100,000 mile warranty
· 150-Point Inspection
· $50 deductible
· Vehicles up to five model years old with less than 60,000 miles are eligible
· Roadside assistance
· Rental car coverage (up to $35/day for up to 10 days)
· Towing coverage (up to $75 per occurrence)
· Travel breakdown coverage (up to $375 per occurrence) · Diagnostics
· Related damage for specific parts
· Fluids
· New car financing rates through Hyundai Motor Financing Company

"We are very excited to launch an industry first," said Kimberly Walker, Hyundai Motor America's national manager of Assurance Products. "Hyundai's new vehicles feature America's Best Warranty™ and adding the same level of value to our pre-owned vehicles is just another example of how Hyundai stands behind their vehicles."

Additional options available to the Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty include service contracts such as the Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Wrap Contract which raises the comprehensive coverage on non-powertrain components, Hyundai Vehicle Care Maintenance Program and Hyundai Road Hazard Tire and Wheel option.

Hyundai Motor America is working with Jim Moran & Associates, Inc. and its affiliated companies comprising the JM&A Group on this industry first, enhanced certified pre-owned program.

Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through more than 750 dealerships nationwide".

I'm aware of the CPO program. I'm strongly considering the option when I purchase my 09/10 model next year since Hyundai's resale value is about as good as a pair of old gym shoes. The problem is that Hyundai's website makes no mention of the program. A Hyundai press release (and several automotive sites/blogs) mention that about half of the 750 Hyundai dealerships will offer the program, but I haven't been able to find a single dealer locally (there are 14 Hyundai dealers within ~100 miles of here) that sells Certified Pre-Owned Hyundai's.

Does anyone know about how to find a Hyundai CPO dealer?

There is so little to read about this program. You can call Hyundai USA but I think

the Hyundai Certified program was put on hold. Plus they cost an extra Grand or more.

When you purchase your 09/10 wouldn't it be new, therefore not eligible for the

additional Certified coverage. For what its worth the entire Warranty used to transfer!

Sorry guys, I think certified cars are a rip-off. If Hyundai has decided to market their used (leased) cars the same way, they’ve obviously moved up into the big league.

Years ago, fresh out of college, I sold cars. This was before Lexus (or whoever) started the certified marketing scam. Back then, when we were asked, “Why does a dealership get more for a used car than an individual selling it privately,” our response was, “A dealership only sells the best cars that get traded-in. We act as a filter and sell the bad ones to wholesalers. Before any car goes on the lot, it goes through our service department, where it gets a 100-point inspection. That assures your car runs correctly and is a safe purchase.” Guess what! The cars really did get inspected and for the most part really were clean. Back then, that was something dealerships did to sell used cars. For that work, the cars sold at the upper end of the retail range.

Today, “certified” cars do NOTHING different. There is no added value. They perform the same inspection they did for years but make it look different. It is a great marketing trick. For added profit, they also force they buyer to purchase a used car warranty. If one wanted the same warranty, they could buy it online for less money than is built into the cost of the Certified car. (And by the way, doesn't Hyundai's 100,000 mile factory drivetrain warranty automaticallly transfer? It sounds to me like they are trying to charge extra for something already part of the car.) In effect with certified cars, they’ve found a way to sell some type of extra warranty on every used car, for more than it is really worth, and they’ve also found a way to make extra profit on an inspection they should have done anyway. For this, they charge an extra $500 to $1,000 dollars for the name “certified.” For an intelligent buyer, certified cars are a terrible value.

The warranty does NOT transfer. That was the reason behind the post. I could care less about a 100, 500, or 10,000 point inspection. Having the 100k powertrain transfer does make it worth it.

well, on the flip side of that Blue, Hyundai CPO's carry the entire 10/100 warranty in addition to the 5/60 BtB as opposed to the 5/60k ONLY that non-CPO's have..

Understood. I guess my question now is what do they charge for the warranty. Is it a good value?

i think part of the "Certified" portion of the label means that the balance of the 10/100k comes with it.. im not sure you pay "extra" for it (although, paying extra for the "certified" part is probably down to the remaining full warranty)

I guess time will tell. I’ll remain very skeptical until then. My old neighbor used to work for Toyota. His job was to reallocate all the cars that came off lease, and once again belonged to Toyota, to various Toyota dealerships. He told me point blank that when Toyota puts the name “Toyota Certified” on a used car, corporate Toyota received $400. That was pure profit for doing nothing, simple corporate involvement. Add to that an overpriced warranty and you’ve got bad value written all over it.

All fine and dandy. But here we see real value in the fact that you get an additional 50K miles worth of warranty.

If you are looking at a late model Sonata with say 35-40K on it...you have all of 7-8 months to make sure all the kinks are worked out. If you develop any kind of (god forbid) tranny issues...you may be looking at a $3K mess to clean up.

Little stuff that would have been covered under the b2b I can live with out of pocket...but having the protection over the drivetrain is a nice little incentive. If Hyundai dealers tack on a few hundred extra to label them as such...rock on.

FWIW, the few I have seen (mostly dealers on Ebay) they have been competitively priced...if not lower than average for CPO.

I wonder if only certain dealers can participate in the CPO?

Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned vehicles must be less than five years old and have less than 60,000 miles. Each vehicle includes:

150 point inspection
CARFAX vehicle history report
10 years/10,000 miles Powertrain Warranty from the original in-service date
24-hour roadside assistance for 10 years/unlimited miles from the original in-service date
$50 deductible
Warranty is transferable
Towing, rental, and travel breakdown benefits for Out of Town Repair/Expense
Free service loan
Special finance terms available

CPO vehicles are selling at a growth rate of around 21% per year.

Probably the best argument for purchasing a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is that most new vehicles depreciate at a rate of approximately 20% per year.
