QUOTE(il06gt @ Jun 22 2008, 08:44 AM) I have been gandering around at picking up a second Sonata. I stumbled on several now that state they are "Hyundai Certified Pre-owned". They list the original 10/100,00 as transferable. Anyone know the deal on this? I dont think I have ever seen a "certified car locally before. This was hard to find, even with our Search function. "PRESS RELEASE:
HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES ENHANCED PRE-OWNED PROGRAM WITH AN INDUSTRY FIRST, 10 YEAR/100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY

"We are very excited to launch an industry first," said Kimberly Walker, Hyundai Motor America's national manager of Assurance Products. "Hyundai's new vehicles feature America's Best Warranty™ and adding the same level of value to our pre-owned vehicles is just another example of how Hyundai stands behind their vehicles."
Additional options available to the Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty include service contracts such as the Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Wrap Contract which raises the comprehensive coverage on non-powertrain components, Hyundai Vehicle Care Maintenance Program and Hyundai Road Hazard Tire and Wheel option.
Hyundai Motor America is working with Jim Moran & Associates, Inc. and its affiliated companies comprising the JM&A Group on this industry first, enhanced certified pre-owned program.

Sorry guys, I think certified cars are a rip-off. If Hyundai has decided to market their used (leased) cars the same way, they’ve obviously moved up into the big league.
Years ago, fresh out of college, I sold cars. This was before Lexus (or whoever) started the certified marketing scam. Back then, when we were asked, “Why does a dealership get more for a used car than an individual selling it privately,” our response was, “A dealership only sells the best cars that get traded-in. We act as a filter and sell the bad ones to wholesalers. Before any car goes on the lot, it goes through our service department, where it gets a 100-point inspection. That assures your car runs correctly and is a safe purchase.” Guess what! The cars really did get inspected and for the most part really were clean. Back then, that was something dealerships did to sell used cars. For that work, the cars sold at the upper end of the retail range.
Today, “certified” cars do NOTHING different. There is no added value. They perform the same inspection they did for years but make it look different. It is a great marketing trick. For added profit, they also force they buyer to purchase a used car warranty. If one wanted the same warranty, they could buy it online for less money than is built into the cost of the Certified car. (And by the way, doesn't Hyundai's 100,000 mile factory drivetrain warranty automaticallly transfer? It sounds to me like they are trying to charge extra for something already part of the car.) In effect with certified cars, they’ve found a way to sell some type of extra warranty on every used car, for more than it is really worth, and they’ve also found a way to make extra profit on an inspection they should have done anyway. For this, they charge an extra $500 to $1,000 dollars for the name “certified.” For an intelligent buyer, certified cars are a terrible value.

That was the reason behind the post. I could care less about a 100, 500, or 10,000 point inspection. Having the 100k powertrain transfer does make it worth it.

I guess time will tell. I’ll remain very skeptical until then. My old neighbor used to work for Toyota. His job was to reallocate all the cars that came off lease, and once again belonged to Toyota, to various Toyota dealerships. He told me point blank that when Toyota puts the name “Toyota Certified” on a used car, corporate Toyota received $400. That was pure profit for doing nothing, simple corporate involvement. Add to that an overpriced warranty and you’ve got bad value written all over it.

Add to that an overpriced warranty and you’ve got bad value written all over it. All fine and dandy. But here we see real value in the fact that you get an additional 50K miles worth of warranty. If you are looking at a late model Sonata with say 35-40K on it...you have all of 7-8 months to make sure all the kinks are worked out. If you develop any kind of (god forbid) tranny issues...you may be looking at a $3K mess to clean up. Little stuff that would have been covered under the b2b I can live with out of pocket...but having the protection over the drivetrain is a nice little incentive. If Hyundai dealers tack on a few hundred extra to label them as such...rock on. FWIW, the few I have seen (mostly dealers on Ebay) they have been competitively priced...if not lower than average for CPO. I wonder if only certain dealers can participate in the CPO?
