Hi ! I'm new to this forum and I wanna thank you all for your help ! I have a 2001 GS (1.5L SOHC) with 150000 km which has been burning oil for years now (since 2005) and has a lot of repair done (front pipe, IAC valve, MAF, coil, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, oxygen sensors... i'm probably forgetting something)... I've never done anything to fix the oil consuption problem because my mechanic told me it was normal with these car (I have to put two oil pints between each oil change or 5000 km).

Now Im burning coolant too, the level goes from full to absolutely nothing in the tank in less than two day (I did less than a 100 km)... I suspected a blown head gasket and took my car to my mechanic who did a pressure test on the coolant system (everthing is fine) and a compression test which read 175 on cylinder 1,2 and 4 and 100 on cylinder 3. My mechanic told me that its now worth it to take off the engine head and look a blown head gasket because if the problem is a cracked head I would have to pay almost as much as if I swapped the whole motor for a used one... What do you think about it ? Im just so tired of spending money for that car which hasn't worked well for more than 6 months since i bought it...

By the way sorry for my english I use to speak french... Just let me know if something is unclear !

I didn't have the oil problem but I am going through the coolant loss with my 97 Elantra. We replaced the radiator and now the water pump.

Do you have any signs of a head gasket? Is your oil foamy? Gunk around where you put the oil in? White smoke? Is your coolant look like an oil slick when it is in the reserve tank?

My radiator is stock and I changed the oil pump twice (last time about 20 000 kms ago)... I didnt noticed any white smoke coming out the exhaust but I noticed a strange smell (It used to smell burning oil only but I now have a burning chemical smell)... My oil doesnt not look any different than it has ever been but my coolant does look a little darkish brown when it is coming low...

take your vehicle to a garage that has the equipment to do a coolant pressure test and aslo get the compressions checked, it sounds as though you have a blowen head gasket, just because you have no signs of water in the oil is inconclusive..if you think about it, if you are loosing water and there is no visual signs of any leaks where's the water going?.....it must be leaking internaly

As i said, I did a pressure test on the coolant system and checked the compression, everything is fine for the pressure test but there is a loss of compression on cylinder #3... I just want to know if I really should swap the motor or if I should only change the head gasket !? thanx a lot

ther is a drastic difference in readings from 1,2,4 to 3 cyl.that is where your problem is.you are smelling the antifreeze burning-hence the chemical smell.my 77 accord was the same way.burned small amount of antifreeze for a while until the gasket gave out - then it really smoked up the yard.youl'' have to way the cost of getting another car with fixing that one.
