Wish I'd known about this site a few months ago. I had a check engine light go on in my 2001 Elantra GT, took it to the dealer, and they replaced an O2 sensor. A month or so later, I got another check engine light; took it in, they replaced the other O2 sensor. Exhaust had also gotten loud, and I noticed my mileage (especially for city driving) seemed to be terrible.

Recently I took it to my hometown repair shop (where I actually trust the guys) and he told me it was a bad flex pipe. But he told me I should bring it back to the dealer, since it might involve replacing the CC and be covered under emissions warranty.

Sounds like the dealer took me for a ride on the O2 sensors when its been the flex pipe all along. My question is, does replacing the flex pipe require doing anything to the CC as well (would that possibly be covered by warranty), or should I just bring it back to my own mechanic to get it done better and cheaper?

Thanks,
Greg

i actually just had mine done yesterday on my 2003 elantra GLS. I didnt go to the dealer they usually rape you pretty bad. There is a small shop on my way home from work that i stopped at. he was just finishing another car up and had time to put mine on the lift. he confirmed it was the flex pippe and offered to do it right there and then. He quoted me $130 including tax, labor and the parts. It was done in 20 min.

You can actually buy pre made sections of flex pipe in different sizes from places like napa, advance, and others and do it yourself if you have a welder. All this guy did was cut out the old one and weld in the new one. Pretty simple. I think for the job $130 was a bit high but probably less than the dealer would charge.
