So before purchasing my 2008 Sonata, I did a fair amount of research. I found a few people talking about a suspension clunk, but nothing that sounded too serious. Anyway, while driving around yesterday, I heard a thud from what sounded to be the left rear. Figuring something hit me, I examined the car and couldn't find anything.

I seem to recall hearing the noise another time, but not quite as audible, so I didn't really take notice. I wasn't on exactly a bumpy road or anything; actually I was driving straight in the city. I did have a mag-light in my trunk/cargo net so I suppose it could have rolled around somehow, but I kind of doubt that was it.

I would not worry too much about it. The clunk that most people had here was noticeable all the time. Plus my 07 does not have it so I doubt your 08 would.

What I have noticed though, is that anytime I run over something from a rock to a medium sized twig, when it rebounds into the underbody it sounds loud like I ran over something huge. Many times I have gotten out expecting to see a hole or something from the noise it made!

I would just chalk it up to very little sound-dampening material in our cars. Just my 2-cents...

The '06's had noisy rear shocks. I finally had mine replaced, but in reality, there are still noises back there. Same as with my neighbor's '07. He says that his old crappy Intrepid was quieter in the rear end! That's pretty bad, Hyundai.

OK... I wasn't too worried, but I was hoping the 2008's wouldn't do it. I do hear persistent noises back there, but it could be objects hitting the under body as mentioned. Plus I have mudguards (I didn't think I'd care for them, actually like how they look!) But perhaps something hitting that would send a bit of a shock through the body... Who knows, either way, I don't have the knocking like my old Cherokee has (though that was the result of being rear ended twice!)
