is anyone else having a problem with sandblasting effect ocurring at bottom of car and bottom of doors behind front fenders right back to the spot where they have the paint protection decals--its like thousands of rock chips. i have mud guards on(at the dealers suggestion when purchasing car) --not sure why this is happening--my 60000 k paint warranty is up , the dealer says they will respray it once but dont want to do it till they can figure out why its happening--first they thought maybe it was an alignment problem and the front tires were sticking out too far--alignment checked - not needed--now they are saying it might be the tires throwing excess dirt and stones.--i find this hard to believe as i think mud flaps would solve this problem if that was the case.---i will enclose some pics later and i am sure you will all be as sickened as i am---this is ticking me off as i just bought my 06 in january 08 (50000k)--deep water blue-- and it was in mint condition now i hate to even wash my car---the dealer said he would talk to his body man and try to figure out how to remedy this issue---do you think he is just blowing me off ?--he is the used car manager of steele hyundai in halifax nova scotia

p.s --i am also ticked off at hyundai canada because they wouldnt even send a rep out to look at it because paint warranty is up.---just wanted some advice from them on how to keep it from happening again---thanks alot---

other than the paint problems , i am loving my sonata

Could be the calcium cloride they switched over to salt the roads with. Have you ever noticed the road was a tint of green or blue when it mented? Or it may be possible they bought the car in 2007, and drove it 50k in one year. That much driving at highway speeds will do it.

I would take the dealers offer, and quick. Get it in writing ASAP, they tend to talk sideways.

DID YOU SAY THE DEALERSHIPS NAME WAS STEELE????????? Hope your money didn't get stollen.

Do you drive on gravel or other unpaved roads at all? It seems odd that all this damage has just happened over the last 6 months and 10,000 kms.

I put the mud guards on my car as well. They are better than nothing but I don't think they hang down far enough to provide the best protection.

there's gotta be something on the roads in order for this to happen.. simple paved highway roads dont produce "sandblast effects" unless there is sand or gravel or something else ON the roads... i drive on 70 miles of highway each day, and have put 17k on my car in the past year, and I do not have that "sandblasted effect" going on with my car....

I have similar damage on my car after 62,000 kilometers.
It had occurred earlier, heck, I was having chipping problems from day 1, but none of the dealers in town were interested in doing anything about it.

think maybe the tire treads could have something to do with it?--thats what the dealer is leaning towards---maybe the tread pattern doesnt "throw " properly(just quoting service manager)---hey if thats the problem , i will have no problem shelling out for a couple of tires if they do the respray---i have never seen this before on newer or older cars--i am really stumped--tires look great by the way--lots of tread left---sales manager says he has seen it on a few cars before but never to this extreme

what tires are on your car? just curious, I have the Michelin OEM's.. maybe the newer ones have the Hankook's?

chips in the car are down to road debris, something everyone has to live with.. but if the dealer is willing to re-paint, why not let them do it (provided they do a good job)

hancooks-----manager also talked about throwing on a couple of extra coats of clearcoat to try to slow it down----think i will get them to spray it and i will replace the tires and maybe install longer mud flaps if i can find any that look decent(any suggestions?)----i never travel on dirt roads--just 50 k highway every day and about 20 k city driving--nothing that could cause this--pictures at 5:00 atlantic time

heres some pics --this is why the dealer will repaint---i am not impressed and i think they can sense it--keep in mind that i just bought this 06 in jan. 08-- it had no mud flaps when it was on the lot--im thinking maybe it was repaired before and they did a half assed job with the cover up and its just wearing away where it was repaired--just a thought , anyone agree? Wow! That looks pretty bad. It seems like there is definitely something wrong with the paint. I have about 68,000 km on my 06 Sonata and don't have that problem although it is Crystal Silver and would not stand out as much if it did. I'm sure I would notice a problem like that when washing it by hand.

I would take the dealer up on their offer to repaint it. If done properly it should not be an issue in the future.

Your problem is modern auto paint. It's garbage. When I get close to the hood of my black Sonata I cringe...

WOW, I thought the "sandblast" effect was apparent on the HOOD of my BLACK SONATA. With 66K in 2 years and gong hard I thought I beat my car up..... but it doesn't even come CLOSE to that...

WOW. That is why the dealer is being so complacent, that is SERIOUSLY BAD.
I mean, at first I thought you just didn't wash it but.... nuh uh.
Are you SURE you haven't been using your Sonata to rally race. :bwekk:

is there any chance that you live in a coastal area? this looks like what used to happen to my cars when I lived in florida. Parking at the beach would actually "sandblast" your car on one side. After about 6-8 months, it would look so disgusting I'd have to have it re-painted.

Coastal areas are a Maaco mgrs. dream come true.

live in the maritimes but no sand where i drive--i'm still thinking it was fixed before and they just did a crappy cover-up before it went on the lot--i am fairly confident that if it gets repaired properly , it shouldnt come back a--not as severe at least---other sonatas i see seem fine but they have all had lower milage than mine or they were light coloured and couldnt notice it

thanks for input everybody--i will keep you posted with repair outcome and photos

i love my sonata other than this and hate the fact the fact that hyundai canada are so unhelpful :whistling:
