We'll need a little more information before we can try to diagnose your problem.

What area is the sound coming from?

Is it constant or intermittent?

Do you only hear it at startup, or only after the car is warmed up - or both?

When did the problem start (i.e. after a service visit or some other event)?

Try to provide as much detailed information as possible, and I'm sure we'd all be glad to help.

For the record, the only issues I've had with a grinding/rubbing noise is from the steering wheel. It's a rubbing sound like two pieces of plastic being rubbed together. It's a very faint sound and it's either gone away or I've gotten used to it. I know several other people have mentioned the same kind of issue, and the only known fix is a full steering wheel replacement (about $1,100 US, but covered if you're under warranty).

Most common caues is CV joint worn out. Sometimes it's a wheel bearing gone dry, or just a tire.

How many miles on your Sonata? Are your CV joint boots intact, or ruptured?

I may have something similar. The noise only happens while braking and turning at the same time such as when pulling up to a stop sign to turn right or when parking the car. The dealer insists it is not in the brakes. They tried replacing a lower ball joint but that didn't fix it.

They said they have had several other cars with the same issue and are trying different things to correct the problem including replacing tie rod ends and front struts. Once they find the repair that solves the problem they will make the repair to all the cars they have had in with this issue.

Apparently, it has been very hard for them to try and diagnose because they cannot get the noise to occur while the car is on a hoist only while driving and with the front end under some load due to braking. I'm hoping to hear something back within the next few days. They indicated that they had just replaced the front struts on one of the cars and it seemed to fix the situation but they wanted to get a report back from the owner after driving the car a bit to verify that the noise was completely gone.

I'll report back if there is any resolution.

Thanks for the replies!!!

The grinding noise seems to happens the most after the car has been going about 40-60 mph and then I stop and make a right turn. The noise is a grinding/rubbing sound that kidda sounds like the brakes are worn or rock is stuck in there. The sound stops when I apply the brakes. The sound has also happened while I exiting off the freeway on a right handed loop. I took it to my dealer they said the could not reproduce it. So I took him for a ride and had no problem producing the sound for him. He said it sounded like I need new brakes. The car has 36k I wouldn't think it would need brakes yet. Thanks for any help!!!

Is it a Metallic sound? I did have a rock stuck in a wheel which I could hear

at Slow speeds only, and it had nothing to do with turning. When the

Dealer cleaned my Brakes they wrecked them, and I returned at closing

time and got new Rotors put on. However with 36K you might need new Brakes.

They are supposed to squeal to let you know it might be Brake time!

I know you might not beleive me, as my vision is going, but...

I had a rubbing/squealing noise from the Steering Wheel, with or without the

Engine on, and it was a rubbing Backplate. Still have the R.O. somewhere!

I have the same problem when I turn right hard, there is grinding noise .. Sound is traveling from front driver side wheel. It is a metal metal clonking noise. It happens only turning right. No sound if straight. I have not taken to my dealer yet but like to hear if anyone found the problem. I won't want my dealer rip me off by changing all components.

See my post above, #4. If that sounds like your problem, I may be able to help as the dealer just figured it out.

They had a few cars with the same problem I was having and it turned out to be the front brake pads. They said there was a new or improved part put out by Hyundai at some time and it corrected the issue. I just had the front brake pads replaced under warranty yesterday and the noise is gone.
