hmmmmmmmmmm... i know it was an off the cuff comment, but i have replaced mine twice in the past year (well, about 8 or 9 months in between) and they were ready to be replaced both times...

Good question actually. And the answer is - if you have one, you had better replace it (like once a year).

I have replaced four of them at yearly intervals (Ihave two lx's) and they were loaded with crud - both leaves and dirt. And, I drive in a pretty clean area - at least I thought so.

If you don't replace them - you will greatly impair your A/C and will get fogged up windows. If replacing the cabin filters is a problem, you might be better just taking out the old one and leaving it that way.

Interestingly, I just leased a 2008 Ford Taurus and it doesn't have a cabin air filter. My guess is that people didn't replace them, so Ford solved the resultant problems by just not using one - after all - we got by for a century or so without cabin air filters.

Back on the orginal topic of price, my dealer has cut the price of filters to the point where they are cheaper than the second sourcers like Advance.

Yea and let all that c rapp in your system. Clogged coils are harder and more expensive to clean than replacing a filter. I'll replace mine this July...one year after replacing what I think was the original one. It was in for two years. Dirty as heck at that time. What I have found is if the inside of my windshield needs cleaning more than every few months it's time to change. The filter that is.

This is the thing right behind the glove box, correct? Do all Sonata's have this, or is it just the ones with the climate control and such. If mine has one, I think it's an Advance Autoparts within walking distance of me. I might run by there and pick one up for later.

Dealer wanted $68 for the filter and to install it. Did not ask about cost of filter... See if I can get a coworker from another town to get one for me if the have an AAP in there town.

im pretty sure all of them in the 'States have it.. I have manual climate control and have the filter...

Strange, I visited the site to try "order online, pick up local" and here's what I got:

Maybe I'll just call the local AAP and see if they have it in stock.

I wish we had so many auto parts stores in Canada with great prices. I just got a quote from the local dealer. The filter is $74.80 plus tax. Even funnier is that they wanted $49 plus tax for the labour to change it. No thanks! I just took mine out for the first time to inspect it and it took me all of about two minutes. I didn't even have to empty the glove box.

I actually like my local dealership though, they just get a little greedy at times but that's where they make most of their money so I guess it's to be expected. I still have to check with some local parts stores but if I don't find anything reasonable I guess I'll be ordering one up from the U.S.

Outrageous prices! Seems more and more logical to go to your local hardware store and buy one of those home-furnace 3M filters, for a FRACTION of the price when you do the measuring and calculate how to get 4 out of this filter........ We discussed it here just lately.

True - you don't have to empty the glove box.

The dealer prices for filters around here, for whatever reason, have dropped to where they are less than the parts stores.

Too bad though that you have the same sort of greedy dealers that we have further south - when it comes to service.

I don't know about the local pickup option, as the closest Advance is 100+ miles away. I ordered online a few days ago and the filter came in today. Maybe I got their last one. :grin:

Anyway, it was very simple to change. It actually took longer letting the heat out of the car than it did to change the filter. From the looks of the one that was in there, it hadn't been changed since the car rolled off the assembly line in November 2005. It doesn't matter now - I changed the black filter out for the white one and all should be okay.

BTW, that $11.96 filter ended up costing $21.21 with tax and shipping. Still cheaper than my dealer, though.

Good tip guys and I agree it si better to have a filter. It is also my understanding that you would be breathing what youo see on the filter or close to it!
