Hello All-
I have a 2001 Sonata that has the same TPS sensor issue everyone is talking about. Need to replace that soon. The real issue right now is the A/C.

It blows hot air. This happened a year ago and I recharged the a/c and all was fine. Today, I went to recharge and the PSI was 150+. There was a warning on the bottle that states there is an issue up in that range.
Any idea what the issue could be and how to fix? When I did recharge the system last year, the PSI was in normal limits and fine when I was done.

Any help would be appreciated as we are moving in 2 weeks and really dont have the cash to take it to the dealer. and.........it has been 90-100 degrees lately. oh and btw - its the wifes car - its all I hear about. :)

Dear brad,

You say the pressure is 150 psi...are you measuring the high pressure port or the low pressure port? If your pressure is that high, you will need to vent some of the refrigerant. The right way is to have it captured at an auto HVAC shop, but do what you need to do.

Interdynamics makes a great kit that has the guage, hose and one 12 oz bottle of R-134 refrigerant with 1.5 oz PAG oil included. The nice thing about this hose is that it will ONLY couple to the low pressure port...stops accidents. Also, the Interdynamics kit has a temperature ring for the pressure guage, as the outside air temp makes a big difference if you are in the range. The guage has a red/yellow/green /red zone on the guage. The kit is about $24, hose guage alone is about $16. Oh....it has instructions so just read and follow. Wear gloves and eye goggles.

The other thing is if your Sonata is either 15% overcharged or 25% undercharged, the A/C compressor will try to cycle and cut out. The car knows that you are over or under pressure, and will stop the compressor to prevent damage from either a hydraulic (trying to compress liquid refrigerant) problem or run dry no lube condition.

Thanks Byron for replying. I think I have the same kit your talking about. Interdynamics "Arctic Freeze" R-134a 18oz Blue Can. Has the gauge on the hose.

1.) Could the guage be faulty?
2.) Could I have switched the caps for High/Low pressure and used the wrong port? Doubt it because I am careful about things like that. I am using the port furthest away from the radiator. The high pressure port is closer.

How would the pressure get so high? I turn the car on, ac on high, attach to the port and take the reading.

As far as venting......do I ( or the shop) drain the whole thing and start from scratch or just bring it down into a proper level?

Thanks again.

Brad,

If you have the Interdynamics kit, the hose coupler will ONLY fit the low pressure port. You do have the right port to check.

Somehow, you have overfilled your system. The right way is to have an auto HVAC shop partially drain and capture the R-134a refrigerant, but your method is up to you.

You do NOT want to completely vent the system...you may only be overcharged by 3 or 4 ounces.

Make sure you are reading the guage with the temperature ring set correctly.

Should be between 25 to 45 psi after you vent some out.
