QUOTE
The bottom line is that if a low price is your main concern, test-drive the Sonata against the Fusion. If you can afford to pay a bit more, test-drive the Accord, Camry, Malibu, or Altima before buying a Sonata. For one reason or another, I prefer all four of those models to the Hyundai. The new Accord is my favorite of the bunch. But the 2009 Sonata is a heck of a bargain, especially at its current price.

To each his own. He did give it 4 out of 5 stars though...

The big negative about the Sonata, at least for me, is its bland and forgettable exterior styling.

Also, the supposedly sporty SE isn't very sporty.

Whats he expecting, a corvette?

The fusion and altima are a LOT more "sporty" than the sonata, although I haven't driven the 09 SE yet, I doubt it comes close to either of those cars.

The accord coupe is on a whole nother level of sportification and really unfair to compare to the sonata... especially once you factor price.

The prejudice on Hyundai automobiles is real. I remember that Hyundai was far down on our list. IMHO the recent updates to the '09 Sonata make only the Altima and Accord superior. Good company to be in considering how difficult this market segment is to penetrate.

I agree...I think predjudice has ALOT to do with it. I have friends that have been die-hard, 4-time Accord owners since 1986. The first thing out of their mouth when I drove up was "Really? You bought a Hyundai?" Along with adding a sympathetic look.

I personally do not care for the Accord. Its too overrated. The Camry is more bland than the Sonata. The Altima is EVERYWHERE so there is nothing unique about it anymore. I won't even metion the Malibu until GM brings their game up a little higher.

To become number 4 is a HUGE feat that deserves more respect than it is often given. Plus, the Sonata just kicks @ss.

I read it and it didn't make my blood boil. He's making good observations. After all, what should we expect the pros to say, that the Sonata is BETTER than the CamCord? It will not be taken seriously.

Wait a couple years, let the name HYUNDAI be more a name brand that's accepted by the wide public.... The horror memories of the 1987 Excels are still vivid....

I agree with Mamamia. Most of what the author wrote has to do with marketing not merit. I could give a rat's patootie about sportiness but it's important to the author; at least he's honest.

I agree the Accord's perfection, but there's the old Russain saying: "Perfection is the enemy of good enough." My Sonata has exceeded good enough by a country mile.

Sounds like all his concerns were what we all know. suspension sucks if your looking for sporty. The manual mode blows big time! and ya other manufactures make sportier cars. But for the money.........

The article is one of the most realistic ones I have read thus far. The Sonata looks like the old style Honda which was a pland exterior style but the interior was above par. However, that is where customization comes in. There are enough internet sites out there which offers exterior add-ons which makes the sonata look at least sportier or unique. If you put on 18" rims, wider tires (chrome accents and rear wing), and lower the car it looks a lot meaner and sportier. BUT the new Hyndai interior out class the Camry and Nissan. In fact, on my last business trip my rental was a 08 Toyota Avalon Touring and the new Hyundai interior looks better. My final thought is that the article did not mention the poor depreciation of the car. The Hyundai dealer tried to sell me a brand new 09 Limited the other day. But I opted out and said I will wait until after summer to purchase a dealer demo thousands of dollars less (plus I want to wait until gas prices drop and they will). I learned my lesson from my 06 LX. I also, told him that I am willing to wait unitl the Genesis' arrives (coupe and sedan). I am fortunate to live in California (SOCAL) where I have acces to many car buying alternatives. In fact I almost purchased a 07 Infiniti M35 the other day from a guy who needed money and was selling the car for a fraction of the price ($22K). But somebody at work beat me to the bank. I have decided not to purchase another brand new Hyundai after seeing how much money I llost in the last two years (even though I paid $20.9k out the door).

Yes, the Sonata is not a a good investment for those who trade in their cars every 2-3 years. It's for those who enjoy their cars for 5-6-8 years.

Heh. A colleague of mine is trying to sell his Toyota Avalon, V6, of course. He told me he's been replacing his Avalons every 3-4 years, always easilly selling his used one privately. This year it's been impossible. Now he's stuck with TWO Avalons. Already the 3rd month. He says he's been advertising on-line, but gets no calls.

Not a bad review at all - he does use three words to describe the exterior styling - bland, forgettable, and anonymous. But, to be honest about it, these adjectives apply to just about every car on the road nowadays (take a close look at the "acclaimed" BMW's sometimes).

I have had my LX's for 2 1/2 years no
