i have a 2000 automatic elantra that, as of last night, will not work unless i jump it every single time i have to start the car. i do not think it is the battery - that is fairly new (under a year) and i have had no problems at all. but i noticed that suddenly, after about five years, the red alarm light near the steering wheel has turned itself on. not blinking, just solid red. coincidence? that's what i'm trying to figure out. is this draining my battery? is this some weird alarm setting stopping the car from starting? it is the factory installed system that came with the car. most importantly, can i fix this without having to take it in? if there is some way to disconnect the alarm completely, that would be fantastic. any help is appreciated :D

Usually if you need to jump the car every time you start the car you probably have a bad alternator, your alternator is what provides power while your car is running as well as recharge your battery so it doesn't die every week. Its an easy thing to check, just start your car and while it is running remove the positive terminal on the battery. If the car dies then you have a bad alternator, if it keeps running then your problem probably lies with your security system.
