Hi all
Fist I would like to say thanks to this forum and everyone in it - great source for info and help.

So I finally ordered my AVIC Z2, ipod and XM - should all be here next week so it looks like a busy weekend for me.

Question, I would like to install a backup camera on my Sonata and not sure which one to get - is there anyone on here that has a picture of one on their cars or any ideas. I am not too fond of drilling a hole in my car but at the same time I want it to look as close stock as possible - don't want a cheap look.

Also is there anyone on here that installed a GPS antenna on their roof - if so, which one and does it mean drilling a hole in the roof etc?

Pictures would be a great help

I did see some backup cameras that mount on the license plate, but don't know if that is going to look so good - they also seem to cost around $100.

Any suggestions would be great - thanks.

I just saw one at Walmart last weekend. Granted, not the fanciest one and the monitor is a little big, but for $87 you can't expect a lot. The real nice part is it's wireless between the monitor and camera. The camera is actually pretty clean looking.

Backup Camera

It does look like the stand can be removed from the monitor for flush mounting.

Appreciate the reply - what are the chances of this connecting to the AVIC Z2 radio. I am going to install the radio next weekend so no need for additional monitors.

Its wireless it MIGHT not work with your monitor 'less theres some way of hooking it up thru the bluetooth!

BUT if I were you i wouldnt get ANY wireless camera as i have just been researching the one i would like to aquire since i just recently bought the new kenwood system (dnx5120).

Anyway most wireless cameras tend to be C-mos format and therefore not as crisp as as a CCD in comparison especially at night! and from all the reviews Ive read the common "problem" I see with wireless is flickering or video noise. While some people dont complain of it too badly it would drive me insane!!

Surprising enough my GPS antenna is inside my dash, I stuck it in there kidding around to see if it got signal from the satellites and it actually did haha. Less running wires for me!

ReBeL_BLaK - I don't mind running the wires for the camera, actually never even thought about a wireless one. My problem is I don't want it to look cheap. I have been looking around on line and most of them look like the license plate ones - the problme witht that is the license plat is somewhat low on the sonata so the camera will be in plain sight, don't think it will look all that good. Was hoping that someone on here has done the mod and made it look like part of the car off the assembly line.

apuforyou - I will definitely test my gps the way you have yours set up - have to wait till next week when it all arrives (hopefully)

Pioneer makes a couple backup cameras, and many of the other brands also have them.
They can often be interchanged, such as Kenwood backup cameras will work with Alpine decks.

dogstar - thanks for the info - I have seen a couple of these but what I was really hoping for is a picture of one installed on a Sonata - I wanted to see what they look like on a car and where about it was placed.

Yeah, this one is cheap looking. Big ghastly thing on the license plate.

What do you want the camera for? If you don't have problems backing up, and you just think it's a cute thing to add on, don't bother.

If you do have problems backing up, you're better off with an audible alarm, so you can watch out the window. Also, audible always works, camera only works when you're looking at it (and therefore not out the window)..... so again, don't bother with the backup camera.

I bought mine because I park in the tinyest parking garage, and have to back into the spot, Some spots back up to a wall, some back up to a chain-link fence..... and I suck at it.

here is mine ,that's what I could get my hands on here.
it's very helpfull assuming that I was driving a hatchback before and now this ,seeing what's going on behind my car was really an issue for me in this car ,and it's really helping me when I'm parking ,like how much space you left .(I'm talking centemeters)
cheers.

The reason I want a backup camera is to judge just how close people are stopping behind me.
For some reason people pull right up behind my car yet leave huge spaces behind other cars and I just want to make sure when I flip them the bird that they are as close as I think they are.

Would be nice for judging aim when throwing slurpees at them too. Could do a kinda behind the back, underhand-overhead thing and get it right on their hood with some practice.

What kind of unit is the camera connected to and does the unit automatically turn on to camera view when you put the car in reverse.
Also what kind of camera is it and how did you mount it.

Thanks

well my head unit is Pioneer AVH-P6850DVD ,and yep it does it automatically ,otherwise it would be useless .
as I remember there was a purple wire at the back of the head unit that commands the camera to turn on when you put the gear to reverse and the power to camera comes from reverse light .
about mounting I guess you gotta make a hole for wires and screw the camera to the trunk ,I also put some silicon glue to make sure no water gets in.
camera was some korean brand don't remember the name .
hope that helps :57:

mine however is (inside the car) mounted on top of my dash in the front of my windshield defroster vent i'll take a picture if you need one...

good luck with your install
