Hi folks,

I bought a used 99 elantra and can not be happier with it. It runs just fine, economic. I jumped on this forum, and try to learn more about overdrive button (O/D), and I found out that I should leave in on in order for running economically. I understand that, but I want to know, if I leave O/D off all the time, and drive it long (1 to some hours continuously), or drive it in high speed (60-80 mph), is it safe? Will driving with OD off kill my car soon, or I will still live fine with OD off?

Another question is about the Power/Normal button near the gear shift. I have no idea what it is for, and what settings I should use.

Please help,

D.

u can leave O/D on for high speed or even low speed but i recommend to put it off while going uphill.
about the power/normal button, on power mode gears takes longer to change thus full power to the car.

for example if u press the accelerator to kickdown on normal mode the gear will change at approx 4000-5000 rpm but on power mode it will change on 6000rpm
it will put more stress on the engine but ull get more power.

Hope this helps
