I have a push button start from my 07 Ram truck that I traded in for my Sonata. I was wondering if anyone has hooked up a push button start to their Sonata?

I see those push button start systems on some of the upper end cars.
I do not get it. I see absolutely NO advantage over the "turn-the-key" starting system. Are the push buttons now the "better" system? WHY?>

Many old cars had the push button starter.

I don't understand the push button start either. I had a 1948 International grain truck that had it and I've seen a few Model T, or Model A Fords with it. Maybe you should get one of them.
:bwekk: push a button, or turn a key!?!?!?! :bwekk:

I think the push button starts are all the rage because the racing cars have them .. I think it was Aston Martin that came out with it again in the mid 90's. All the cool kids have it now ...

Honda S2000 actually started the general craze, but there were a few examples earlier.

I don't get it either, you still have to turn the key most of the way to RUN, then press the start button.

To each his own I suppose... I don't believe I have seen one in a Sonata, nor can I help with the wiring. Check the online tech manual and best of luck Euro.

I don't get the point of them either. Seems like more work than it's worth.

I wouldn't mind the newer systems with the smart key though. I think they use it on the Veracruz. You just have to have the key in your pocket and the door will unlock for you automatically and you hop in and press the start button to fire it up.

The deal with current push button starting (if you have the right setup like G35, Genesis, etc.) is that you don't have to take the keys out of your pocket/purse. The car senses the RFID and pairs up with the transceiver in the key fob. It does this when you're walking up to the car, so you just walk up to the car and touch the button on the door handle to unlock the car and just sit down and press the start button. Very slick. The car basically identifies that it's you before you get there. If someone else walks by also emitting a signal but the key pair doesn't match it just ignores it.

That's TRUE keyless starting, and I like it. You never have to dig for your key.

just to re-cap on madhatters post the new idea of the push button start on modern vehicles is that you do not have any keys. there is a 'smart card' or remote that automatically opens the doors and neutralizes the alarm systems (on some models you don't even have to take the 'smart card' out of your pocket or press any buttons) because it works on a auto radio frequentcy, hence the push button start and stop. as you get out of the car and walk away from it the doors lock and the alarm is activated again without pressing any buttons, some middle of the road european cars now have this system as standard, there is one big drawback. if you happen to lose your smart card the dealer charges mega bucks to supply a new one and re-programme the system. the smart card that 'renault' are using is for some reason about twice the size of a credit card but quite ridged, l heard cases where guys have put it in the back pocket of thier jeans and then later sat down and snapped it in half.....expensive!

The true smartkey RFID starting is cool, and much different from the key+start button that I believe the OP is describing.
RFID stuff isn't too hard to implement if you are good with electronics, definitely doable with a home workshop, but it's tough to find compact RFID transmitters that are small enough to fit on a keychain but still possess good range.

You could go with something like a prox card and embed the reader in the car, but most prox readers only have about 24" range, so you would need three to provide reasonable range.
One in each B pillar, and one in the center console could provide a bubble 24" out from the B pillars and almost to the middle of the front bucket seats.

http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=24

Worth thinkin about, but not really cheap to implement.... Would rather just buy an infinity or saab or whatever and save myself the trouble in addition to upgrading to a fancier car.

STILL DON'T GET IT!!! You ALWAYS have to remeber your key, or card (whatever) every time you go to the vehicle. Lifting gently from a pocket to ignition is the only step that may be saved. WHOPPPPIIIEEEE

just keep the card key in your wallet, (assuming it fits - cause Sonata drivers always have thick wallets  ), and you never have to worry about forgetting anything

I have to wear a prox card on a keyback thing all day, so it'd be no biggie for me to change to a lanyard or keyback for my car-card :D

LOL
It's faster to put a brick through the window and hammer a screwdriver into the ignition.
Don't let some bogus CNN report worry you bud :)

Theft is about the last thing I consider when buying a car, cause you know what.... If they want it, they WILL have it. You can deter the casual thief and annoy the professional with a good alarm, but the net result is the same, if they want it bad enough it's gone.

Just be glad that most thieves aren't bored enough to steal a Hyundai and consider it a "perk" of buying a car that isn't exactly a top seller.

The ultimate would be a fingerprint reader on the driver's door and all push buttons for starting, trunk, etc. I think they're getting pretty reliable and fairly cheap.
