Have a 2001 Santa Fe with approximately 120,000 miles. It is 2WD automatic transmission. While driving we have been noticing that the tranny seems to stay in 2nd and not changing to 3rd to make a smooth change in gear. If we use the manual mode of the transmission, we have no problem going from 2nd to 3rd to 4th. This happens only when we are in drive. Any idea what this can be and is it something that can be fixed without taking it to a transmission specialist knowing that they will say "It needs an overhaul" That is our experience anyway. Thanks.

Dear tbone,

At 120,000 miles, you are now at a point where three things routinely fail tied to the transmission:

a) Transmission input sensor
B) Transmission output sensor
c) Throttle position sensor

You can have a Hyundai dealer test these sensors before replacing. Have you gotten a Check Engine Light? If yes, get the codes read for free so we know what your problems are. Free OBD-II code reading at Checker Auto. Auto Zone or Pep Boys.

Have you had your transmission flushed and refilled with SP-III fluid or equivalent? I recommend this first, as it fixes your 2nd-3rd shift problem most of the time.

Byron

Thank you Byron, We will get the transmission flushed and fluid replaced. We will let you know how it goes.

We see a lot of issues with the transmissions and input and output sensor needing to be replaced. Is this typical for Hyundais?

We had the transmission flushed and oil changed and what a wonderful difference!!!! Thanks for the input.

How do you find the output speed sensor and how difficult is it to change. We figure with so many miles maybe that will help even more. Any suggestions?

Actually...the only SM body Santa Fe to have drive-by-wire was the 3.5 liter from '03 to '06. 2.4 and 2.7 liter models had mechanical throttles.
