Heres the deal, ( bear with me on this please)

My girlfriend bought a 2001 with 200,xxx miles on it, it was running fine except for the fact that the transmission would "kick" as it shifted sometimes, and the tach would work when it wanted to.

now the problem is the car will start and drive for like 4 miles then die and it will not restart unless it sits overnight the transmission problem still happens except now it shifts really hard and when your foot is all the way down on the gas the car will only go up to like 50mph.. and the oil pressure light blinks even though the car has fresh oil in it...as of now i dont even think i can even drive the car to a mechanic to have them take a look at it..any suggestions would help.

thanks

Marc =)

well I would say the problem is 200,000 + miles. . . Holy hanna that's a lot. Is it still the original transmission??? Was the transmission fluid ever changed. Also, just curious, but how much did she pay for an Elantra with that many miles???

As Far as i know the transmission was changed, i guess it was just never maintained because it was sitting for quite sometime along with the high milage..she payed 1,200 for it.

Well I am far from being a mechanic, the transmission might be as little as needing to change the fluid, or could be much worse (like needing a whole new transmission) As far as driving a few miles and then just dying, not sure exactly what could cause that problem. Good luck.

Dear KDM,

I never assume...so do you have a yellow Check Engine Light showing on the dashboard? You probably are getting Diagnostic Trouble Codes. These tell us what is wrong with your car.

As far a a car starting, and dying after driving 4 miles, this could be from many causes but you should still get a yellow Check Engine Light (also called Malfunction Indicator Light). You can get those codes read for free at many auto parts stores like Pep Boys, Checker Auto, or Autozone.

If she paid $1,200 for a car with 200k miles, can she get her money back? Did she get a warranty with the sale?

Byron

Check engine light is on i have'nt pulled the codes yet on it..and as for the 1200 being refunded she bought it from a private seller(actually her boss) we are actually selling it and have it up for sale on craigslist for $1000 obo..the car still has alot of potental especially for the mechanically inclined. we just dont want to deal with it especially after reading the post from someone on here that had the same problems said they paid like 600 something to have it fixed and it later died on them again and the shop quoted 1000 to repair it.
