Hi all.. I'm about to undertake doing a brake job on my mother-in-law's '02 XG350. I've done brakes before on my US made cars, but this will be my first one on a foreign car. I'm expecting it to be uneventful, but nevertheless, I thought I'd stop by here first.
Her car has the classic brake pedal and steering wheel vibration when braking indicative of a warped rotor. My late father-in-law had the rear brakes done before he passed away last year. The car has 32K mi on it and I thought it very odd that the rears were the ones that needed to be done first but hey, I wasn't asked about it as it wasn't my car or decision.
So, I'm just going to R/R the rotors and pads and be done with it. My question is: Are there any "gotchas" waiting for me on this job / car? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
TIA - Steve

QUOTE(montego @ Jun 3 2008, 02:54 PM) steve, this is a very straight forward job if you know what you're doing and there should be no trauma's Ahh.. Great! This is what I expected / hoped to hear. I'll be picking up the rotors and pads tomorrow and will be installing shortly thereafter. Thanks for the quick response! Steve

Steve, I have a 03 and also had your same concerns. Many brake jobs, but never one with ABS brakes. My concern was not to do any harm to the ABS system. I did take the precaution of opening bleeder when I compressed the caliper piston. 10mm off set box wrench. Used some penitrating lube a few days prior to doing the job. We all hate to touch those little guys, but I made out ok. Rotor did not come off all that easy, rusted on to the hub. Those little screws put in at factory did not come out without stripping. Ended up just drilling them out and vise grips to twist out of hub. Don't need them. Was I overly concerned with the ABS, may have been. Thought I would mention those little screws in rotor. Most times they don't just unscrew. Bruce

Ramblemn, looks like you have a good one. Wish I could say the same. As it turned out, I had no problem with either front or the rear brakes installing pads and rotors. Rear rotors were rusted on to hub pretty good and had to drill out the little screw installed at factory to hold in place on assembly line. Did open bleeder when I compressed piston on caliper. Was concerned what some back pressure would do to ABS senser. Never was a brake flushing guy in the past, closed system, no dirt should contaminate. Now I like to bleed a little brake fluid out and get some fresh in. Got to think when fluid gets as hot as brake fluid can get. Has to brake down somewhat. Know it changes color as it ages. This a great site, nice to have a chat with fellow owners. I not to old to learn and sometimes learned the hard way. Good luck
