My 2002 Elantra seems to revving quite high (around 3,000rpm) when I start the car, and unless I hit my accelerator, it doesn't seem to go down. Any ideas what this could be?

I know that the dealer suggest I do a transmission flush, and instead of getting it done at a Hyundai dealer, I went to a garage where they replaced the filter and asked me to come back in another 20,000km to get my fluid replaced again. But the problem of my engine revving high cotninues.

It especially happens when i start the car after having it off for a few hours.

The revving is followed by a little bit longer than normal switching from 1st to 2nd gear. After the first 2-3 minutes of driving, everything is fine.

140,000km on my the '02 Elantra so far.

Any thoughts?

Possible TPS issue? Maybe there is a way to read codes on these cars? if so, i would suggest checking the codes to see if it is reporting TPS out of range...

If the non-dealership place used anything other than SP-III fluid in your transmission, you may have already killed it. Many "universal" AT fluids have detergents that damage the materials in Hyundai transmissions.

If you problem is not the transmission itself, I suspect a bad Intake Air Controller or Throttle Position Sensor.

I will f-up with the garage I went to. I was having the problem even before the transmission flush though.

Can the non-Hyundai guys replace an Intake Air Controller or TPS?

Are these relatively expensive?

Any problem replacing these even if nothing is wrong with them?
