Hello all

I am a newbie in DIY on cars. I am trying to replace CV joints on my Elantra 2000. I have done it before on a Nissan Sentra.

The car is from the north and quite rusted.

On the driver side, I had some problem in breaking the hub nut loose. But eventually with rust eater and some heat to the nut, using a 32mm breaker and 3/4 breaker bar I was able to break it loose and open it. The problem I am having is removing the driveshaft.

Normally, I loosen the hub nut and try to push back the shaft with a sharp blow and then remove it after opening the ball joint etc. My problem is that I am not able to move it even a millimeter. I have used rust eater etc and beat the **** out of it. But it seems that the shaft is stuck due to rust in the ball bearing casing.

Am I doing this right? Do I need to remove some other things before I can push the shaft out. I read a few post on the forum and checked out the hmaservice website but could not find much details. There has been mention of removing the snap ring but thats after I push it out and that ring is also on the other side, I mean away from wheel. Am I correct?

I was able to easily push the passenger side shaft inside and its ready to be replaced.

Have been working on this for week with no success :( . Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

it is not uncommon for the shaft to get siezed in the hub bearings which seems to have happend in your case, you may have already tried this, but screw the nut back on the shaft so as not to damage the thread and hit it hard with a hammer, if it's available use an air chisel on the end of the shaft to cause a hammer/vibration effect. if all else fails you will have to remove the whole hub assembly compleate with the drive shaft and press it out on a hydrolic press

You probably have this done by now but for anyone else that wants to do it their self auto zone and probable most other auto parts dealers have a boot that is split in the middle and you fasten it around where the old one is and it saves a lot of time and effort.. i used zip ties instead of the screws and they worked just fine, and there a cinch. to replace.
