47 is about the same as Hyundai's quoted extra urban fuel consumption, pretty good if you can get close to that.
Today, I drove 277 miles, 20 miles urban, rest dual carriageway and motorway at 70-75, me and two teenagers plus a bit of stuff in boot but not maxed out. No roof bars on but permanent tow bar fitted. Usually drive with lights on and air con working all the way. Trip comp says 36.5 and that's consistent with similar journeys where I used pen paper and odo. As I wasn't even booting it on this journey, I can't see how I can get close to 47 let alone 54.
To get 47-54MPG, are you driving unladen with lights and air-con off and only accelerating really slowly from a standing start? Do you always keep the revs below 2000rpm even when accelerating?
What I'm getting at, is if there is not anything fundamentally wrong with what I'm doing then there might be something wrong with the ECU.
Edit; Do you have one of the earlier 2nd generation Santa Fe's? Is it possible that the higher MPG figures come from the earlier 150 BHP engines and the lower ones from the later 155BHP engines?
To answer some of your questions, The journey I calculate my MPG figures from is 128 miles, 120 of which are motorways. My acceleration is within what I would class as normal driving, ie not thrashing and going over 2K revs (approx change at 4K ish??)
The car is unladen,AC off, no lights, with just myself in it, I still have the roofbars on and drive at between 60 - 70mph.
I wonder if the fact that I have the old euro III engine makes any difference? I think it's the 150bhp??
Also I can now consistantly get over 48Mpg according to the OBC on this journey, if I drive at this avarage speed?? it's not a freak one off!
I am really pleased with this return and hoping not to find out it is a faulty ECU on either car. (I especially hope it's not mine!! )
Just out of interest did the actual engine change between euro varients or did they just introduce extra features to the euro III?
And is it a Hyundai supplied and built engine or is it borrowed from GM or Peugeot etc and fitted into the santa fe by hyundai? Perhaps if this is the case we might get to know what the engine actually is and find out any eco tips etc??
Anyone on the inside got any clues why figures could differ so much??
