Poll's already over hunnychub... and it looks like a puzzling majority of autoweek readers would prefer to go for the cheap-feeling, undercooked, under-engineered, plastic-laden and aesthetically impaired American clunker. :whistling:
Honestly, I know some folks here take the G8 seriously and I'm sure it's fine for what it does, but anyone who seriously compares the Genesis to the G8 might be missing just a few relevant facts. In fact, their only relevant similarity is that they will cost about the same - may be the G8 will be a little less.
Just to make sure everything receives its proper accolades relative to Genesis, a Corolla will also cost less than a new Genesis. So... you know. Props to Corolla as well. :trophy:

I agree Dean, that the late-game shift up in price is going to be ever more difficult to pull off with a weak economy and astronomical gas prices, but it's probably in the ballpark of what they had planned all along. Their longstanding claim of "starting under $30,000" was just for the 3.3, which they decided finally not to offer in North America at launch. And even so, it would have probably been $29,999.99.
The relevant difference between the Genesis and G8 as I see it is all of the bells & whistles, luxury features. Leather interior, heated & cooled seats, Lexicon stereo system, rear camera, general cabin design, layout, materials quality. And all the other little things. The Genesis is loaded up; I would venture to say Hyundai is going out on a limb more by installing all of this electronic widgetry than by developing a new-from-the-ground-up chassis, suspension, engine, and using some very sophisticated high-end transmissions. But that's what sets it apart, and makes it a proper luxury entry. The big 3 are all proving that they're willing to drop some motor with more oomph into a common car and sell it cheap, and I actually hope it works - I hope that brings business back into the U.S.
But that's not ALL that's important about Genesis (at least, in theory... we'll see when they arrive). It's the total package. If the bells & whistles, creature comforts and amenities, the look & feel & quality of build & materials aren't critical, then the buyer isn't really a Genesis buyer to begin with.
Disclaimer: all of this is based, of course, on what we have HEARD about Genesis, not on first-hand experience... so I'm little more than a mouthpiece for Hyundai marketing literature in positing all of this. I still reserve judgment until someone here actually has one and tells us about it.
