A few days ago I bought a used 01 Accent and since I have no idea what the service history is, I went to the dealer and they brushed me off...
They claim that the service history is similar to medical information and thus protected similarly to privacy act info.
The car has 106k miles and runs well but who knows if the timing belt has been replaced or if recalls were done, they will only tell me if the car was ever seen, not what was done...
I am pretty irritated to say the least!!!
Any ideas on how to get the service history?

If there were any recalls, a Hyundai dealer should be able to find out whether the repairs had been done. If they won't (which they should) perhaps you can contact Hyundai USA for assitance.

Some states require by law that the dealers provide you the previous owner's information upon request when buying a used car... Not sure if Montana has such a thing but it would be worth looking into.

Try a different dealer. I did the same when I bought an 03 Santa Fe used. All dealers can see waranty / recall info with the vin. I was not able to get info on general maint like oil etc though.

I wish I could just go to another dealer, not many choices in Great Falls, MT...

Try the service department here. This is the dealer behind the www.hyundaiaccessorymall.com website and have been super local and online customer friendly to me in the past when my local parts dept didn't care.

if the timing belt was done there should be a sticker on the engine cover stating date and mileage. If you can't get info from a dealer call the Customer Relations line and COMPLAIN. The only thing they can't tell you about a vehicle's history is previous owner, but shouldn't be denying previous maintenance info if you are requesting it.
