I am looking to possibly buy a bike rack for my '08 Santa Fe. Has anyone put a bike rack on their's yet, and if so how much did it affect your gas mileage when you have it on the SUV?

If it is going to effect my mileage dramatically I am going to skip buying the roof crossbars and bike rack, and just keep putting it in my back seat.

Hey man. We have Thule bike carriers on the factory cross bars. It was a bit of effort to mount them, had to drill and bolt to put them on, but got there in the end :)

They definitely effect mileage. We've started putting the bikes in the back for longer trips. When the bikes are on the roof the fuel consumption goes from around 9L/100k to around 10 or 11L/100k.

Hitch kits aren't that expensive and are DIY.

I have a Thule Revolver, it swings out of the way nicely when needed.

Just make sure that the particular carrier that you get does not put the bicycle wheels close to the exaust. The heat will blow a tire.

It has happened to a couple of people who frequent this site.

Sounds like you missed the adapter kit. The kit basically eases installation big time, and no drilling.

Hi, I was asking the same question to myself. The other problem is Height. I have no problem putting my bike on or taking it off the roof rack but my mife definitely could so for more convenience, I bought a Thule 2 bike hitch carrier. Very sturdy, user-friendly and you can even use it as a work station if needed before of after your ride. Very handy, too. The only drawback is that you have to close the hatch before you mount the bikes on and you have to dimount the bikes before you can open it. Once you are used to it, it is not a problem anymore.

Cheers. Have a nice ride.
