Hi guys,
Most of our entries in this forum seem to be pretty positive.
Thats stands to reason as we here for the most part own and love our i30"s.
I just thought it would be interesting to list some of the thing we love about our i30 but also some of the little quirks that bug us as well. Come on there must be something. :innocent:
I will get us started. I love the overall styling of the vehicle. I love the fuel economy of the manual deisel. I love the leather wrap sports style steering wheel but hate that it doesnt have cruise controls mounted.
What I dont like is a short list. I find the blue digital odometer hard to read on a bright day or when wearing sunnies. While I said I like the style, I am not big on the rear tail lights, not sure they do justice to the rest of the car.Thats about it.
If thats all i can find to complain about, I must be on a winner :460:

Hi Eyma,

I'm probably the biggest raver on this site about my i30 SLX Diesel but like most cars it's not perfect.

Because I've had a lot of Nissans (with nice smooth revy engines), I sometimes find the vibration through the steering generated by the diesel motor disconcerting.

The gear change is acceptable (and getting better) but not as crisp and smooth as some others I have had.

Like you I'm not totally convinced by the styling (Particularly the rear lights) but they are growing on me.

I use wipes to clean my hands after re-filling because there is usually diesel all over the pump....

But... I think it is these little quirks that add to the likeability of our little diesel (it has character)

Years ago I went from a chuckable little Pulsar SSS to a bigger more cruisey Bluebird SSS and although it was quieter, more luxurious etc.etc. it just wasn't as likeable

Rgds,

Dazz

Well I just love the torque, and hate the tear vision irrors that make things look further away then they really are.

Dazz you should drive an old 2.4 litre Hilux Diesel or a Daihatsu Rocky 2.8 diesel, the Hyundai diesel is a smooth gem of an engine (for a diesel) I've had a few jaws drop open from passengers when I'e said this is a diesel

Best thing I like is the look of disbelievement on the face of the driver behind me when they try to "push me along" the road and I floor the accelerator and leave them WELL behind. Take up is spot on.

I'm not keen on:
The dash display. Poor to read in daylight.
Gear change, especially 3rd to 2nd, but getting better.
Having to put diesel in it after the lad has "borrowed" it.

What I love  :
The sound system – I’m sure other SR owners would agree, the sound quality is brilliant!
The styling both inside and out (1 exception – see below)
The wheels, the wheels, and the wheels :amen:
The very smart interior design
The drive… so smooth, ample power, and so quiet
Fuel consumption
Cruise control (!!!!)
Climate control
Defogging and demisting of front and rear windows is the fastest I’ve ever seen! It often gets comments from passengers as it clears up in seconds.
The colour (moonlight blue) – I never thought that I would like this kind of colour, but it has really grown on me to the point where I wouldn’t want anything else.

What I don’t like so much: :(
Poor visibility out the back and side blindspot
The drivers seat could go back just a little more. (but I’m very tall)
The styling at the front of the car (grill, lights, etc) is a bit plain for my liking
The side mirrors do take some getting used to
Dash display is difficult to read on a bright day
The firmer ride in the SR is sometimes a bit too firm over large bumps
Cost of the iPod cable (I won’t buy one at $110)

Tim

I adore almost everything to do with my ride, apart from the following brief list...

1. When I select "auto" on the climate control, the AC is automatically switched on. Why?

2. The interior vanity lights (sun visor mirror lights) do not extinguish when the car is locked. Hey, when I've been putting my lippy on, I need the light to go off when I go out to my office :P

3. Selecting reverse is very hit and miss. Usually I have to declutch twice and even then, it's a tough selection.

4. I wish the folding mirrors would open out when I set off, rather than making me reach out and press the button. Lazy git. Yeah I know...

5. I wish the alarm sentinel was a separate module rather than using the horn. Sounds cheapish. Then again, I just hope I never hear it going off

6. Why does diesel keep going up at the pumps? Not an i30 fault I know but as I'm posting anyway... another 2p/litre today. Now showing £1.30 at the pumps.

I've got a loverly bunch of coconuts. Oh hang on, wrong forum :w00t:

Cons
- Booming from windows when they're all the way down and driving above 80km/h (must be something to do with the body shape)
- iPod cable cost (as mentioned above)
- Very loud bass response on high quality MP3 playback but this may just be the cheaper speakers in the SX.
- The cheaper speakers in the SX ;)

Pros
- Everything else

Can't say I've ever had a problem with either the mirrors or reading the dash display. Maybe they're different in the SX as I believe most of you have SLXs or SRs.

Things I love about my SR:

*The stereo!!! It just canes!!! I haven't managed to make it distort yet, even at ear bleeding levels lol.
*The smooth power delivery and surprisingly zipping overtaking
*THE WHEELS!!! They attract a lot of comments.
*The economy
*The noise the leather makes when you slide into the seats
*The colour - Steel Grey is IT.
*The ease of closing the rear hatch. Makes a nice 'thunk' sound with no rattle
*The two different sized cup holders in the centre console
*The effectiveness of the climate control
*The steering - nice and firm at highway speeds, light around the city
*The colour of the main dials when illuminated (speedo, tacho etc)
*The 'bling' around the cabin

Things I'm not so hot about:

*The cruise control takes 3 seconds to engage (I've counted)
*The carpet feels thin and cheap
*The stereo screen scratches easily (use microfibre!!)
*The iPod (when connected with the Hyundai cable) ALWAYS starts up when you turn the car on, even if you last were listening to the radio or CD. And even if you were listening to the iPod last, it won't start at the song it stopped on, but rather will go back to the start...
*The Hyundai logo/handle on the hatch feels slightly flimsy when opening the hatch
*The ride can be slightly firm at times
*Some trim plastics are easily scratched
*The stereo display can be a bit bright at night - should be able to dim it seperately to the main instruments (you can turn it off but what's the point of that??)

I LOVE MY i30!!!!

Hey Shambles,

The way I understand the Auto function, it depends on the ambient temperature and what temperature you've got the selector set to. For example I find in the winter if I have the selector set to above 23 the air doesn't come on when i press auto unless it is set to windscreen defrost. If lower than 23 (like between 19 & 21 in summer) then Air does come on with Auto button.

Interesting about selecting reverse, first time i've heard of anyone having a prob with that. Assume you have the lift up collar to stop accidental selection? Might need to get it checked at next service (change gearbox oil perhaps)

Maybe the switching on the mirrors could be re-wired to make them fold back out when you start the car...

You need to keep your "flaps" shut when not putting your lippy on...

and.. I thought most security alarms use the horn?

Rgds,

Dazzling :bwekk:

What i like about my poverty pack CRDi 5speed
it turn's in a tighter circle than the SLX or SR

it has traveled 3,300k's and i have not had to fill up b4 1,000 k since the last fill up

it is reasonably comfortable on a trip.

as it's a silver SX it does not mind if i don't wash it :)

what i don't like is poor rear view ( the thick pillows at the back side of the car limit rear view when reversing )

bit slow in accelerating off the light's ( i'm used to a V8)

but in the end it's a great little car for the price. still has a cheap chearfull reputation having a Hyundai badge but that's what you get for being cheap :)

Hi John,

Two things....

Could be wrong but think SLX has same turning circle as SX only SR larger due to 17" wheels... :whistling:

I haven't noticed any cheap & cheerful stigma with the i30 so far (people seem to be acknowledging it is in a new league for Hyundai)

My likes :

Wheels
Clamite control
Front defogging, rear & mirrors heating as tk421 mentioned
Small steering wheel
Nice speedo,tacho layout,cluster layout
Auto light
Wheels (expensive to replace is the downsize)
Cruise control
Ipod terminal
Storage compartments
Auto door lock
ESP & TCS

My dislikes;

Blank front styling as tk421 mentioned (however looking forward to have SR front & rear body kit installed, would look much better.)

Plastic trim very EASY to get scratched as budyforu mentioned

Leather seat trim also easy to get damaged, just have mine replaced and I think it will happen again soon.

Blind spots

That's all I can think of for now :)

Hi,

has anyone notice this peculiar feature; 'hand brake lurch'.

If you apply the hand brake whilst you have your foot on the brake, the car will move slightly forward (or back) when you take your foot off the pedal.

Bloody disconcerting doing hill starts in traffic. For half a second it feels like the hand brake is not holding.

Yes I noticed it the first day I got mine.

I was parking at work and stopped on a slight hill. Pulled up handbrake, 4 notches, took foot off brake peddle and the car moved. Had to pull up handbrake a few more notches.

Ask Dealer and they said it was to do with discs configuration on rear wheels.

On flat handbrake only moves up max of 4 notches on incline 7-8 notches.
Scarry at first but use to it now.

Re Mirrors
I think the mirrors in the SX and SLX are standard do not retract electrically in Oz. Don't know about the SR.

A good thing about the mirrors is the heating - really helps early in foggy conditions.

Re Handbrake
To cold to check now and get under the car, but I believe the handbrake does not use the disc brakes on the rear wheels. From my first brief look under the rear, I think I saw a small drum inward of the rear discs activated by the handbrake cable. If I am right, this could account for the lurch when you take the foot off the brake pedal as the two systems operate independantly - the handbrake would not grab until a slight movement occurs on the rear wheel.

Another gripe
Check inside the center consol. The base is a flimsy piece of dense foam. Lift it out and you can access the handbrake cable adjustment. You think Hyundai could have fitted a solid plastic lift out panel with a rubberised top to stop the rattles. Or, is there one in other i30s and mine is missing? I might make one myself asours seems to be caving in a bit.

Bob

Ah nice one Bob. I've just been out to mine to check.

As with yours, it's a 4" by 3" dense foam square and I can feel there is no base beneath it. However, despite my best efforts using a fork handle, I cannot raise the mat from the sides, although I could probably push down through it to force the glue to break.

I wish you hadn't mentioned it now :P

Sorry Shambles,

There is a small cut out on one edge of the foam to help in lifting it out. Mat is not glued, it just sits in there. Is meant to come out to give access for handbrake adjustment.

Speaking about access, I reckon you can gain access to the top of the stereo unit by removing two screws under the soft plastic mat in the dash pod. I figure the pod would then lift out. Might try it one day - just curious.
