Hi, I have a 2003 Sonata GLS w/ 2.7L V6. The last three times I have refeuled, it was hard to get it restarted. It would start and idle very rough then die. This happened several times. I had to keep the RPMs up so it wouldn't die out on me. After this initial problem, the car will start and run fine until I have to get gas again. It only occurs when I refuel...If I'm at home or work, she'll fire up fine. Any thoughts? TIA Bob

Bob,
I just start experiencing the same problem. Did you ever find out what the problem was?

Nope. It's still doing it. ONLY when I refuel. It will start fine until I need to refuel again.... Post here if you find out what it is. I'm going to try a new gas cap ($7- $8)....

Dear rjt,
Concur with Chinook. If your evaporative charcoal canister gets saturated with gasoline, say from consistently overfilling your tank, this can cause a rich start condition...like the symptoms you mentioned.
You did not mention any Check Engine Lights, and normally problems with the charcoal canister will give you a CEL.

Take it to the dealer and tell them to check the evap system purge valve bet its stuck open ,its on the back of the intake manifold 2 rubber hoses on it an 2 wires ,the evap lines are made of steel and rust flakes inside of the steel lines get in the valve and it sticks open , you should have a check engine light on too ,the new valves have a filter to stop this from happening again ,and don"t over fill the tank with gas ,when this valve is stuck open the gas fumes from the tank are forced from the tank when filling with gas into the engine and cause a flooding condition ,if valve is closed it stops this from happening hope this helps
