Surging fuel prices have driven Montgomery's Hyundai plant to get its new four-cylinder engine plant on line in a hurry.

Managers want the engine plant to start production in a couple of months because of the increased demand for the fuel-efficient engines.

Plant officials and Hyundai product planners told a group of journalists Thursday that the company is putting four-cylinder engines in about 70 percent of its top-selling Sonata sedans, a change that has increased the pressure to get the new engine plant in operation.

A year ago, about 70 percent of Sonatas had six-cylinder engines.

Maybe the V6's will be worth more :bwekk:

Where are the 09 SE's? My dealer has yet to get one and I haven't seen one except on the Sonata commercial.

Alittle off topic. Any one see the Impreza commercial? There is a silver 4 cylinder Sonata infront of the first Impreza.

Hyundai is planning to bring diesel Veracruz next year or so. Sonata diesel would be sweet too, but Hyundai has yet to meet 50 state emissions.

I seriously doubt they will bring it to market. No diesel is going to be 50 state compliant...so why go through the hassle. If CA would ease off on their ridiculous CARB standards, we could all have 40 mpg Sonatas....but that would then make sense...

what do you mean ? VW and Mercedes have been compliant for years ...

the new Blue Tec diesel pollutes far less than a gas engine now ...

The new (2009) VW diesel should be 50 state compliant without the use of urea additive. (MB BlueTec needs AdBlue, once the "low AdBlue" light comes on you can only start the engine 20 more times before it locks out completely.)

Even with diesel approaching prices 20% higher than regular unleaded, if you could get 38% economy increase (V6 gets 29 EPA highway, vs. approx 40 for a diesel), you'll still save money when it comes to fuel cost per mile.

Scott

CARB standards change again in 2010. I believe that NY (and NJ??) copy their standards straight from CARB.

I swear there is something sinister with that organizationa nd I am far from tinfoil hat membership.

One obvious problem with us all switching to diesel is our refining and delivery systems are NOT ready to absorb even 1% of us switching to diesel power. Fuel is already very close to $5 and stressing that delicate system could really cause it to skyrocket.

Right now with a 70 cent spread, the mileage gains are negligible.

If you do mostly highway driving, I find the gas mileage isn't far off between the I4 and V6 yet you get A LOT more power. The 4 cylinder definitely does better in around town driving though. That said, my next Sonata will likely still be a V6 SE. I just wish they had offered the stiffer suspension from the begining. It's the one area where I think this car could be improved upon most. Smart move for Hyundai to get that new 4 cylinder plant on the fast track to production though.

Does anyone know whether or not the diesel that is currently available has high sulfur or low sulfur?
