perhaps a hatch mounted one? doesn't have to be the most secure locking carrier on the face of the planet, as if i'm not driving the car, the bikes will either be off the car or within sight for the most part.

just looking for a cheap way to keep dirt & mud out of my car when coming back from a ride.

hitch & hitch mounted rack or trailer cost a LOT more than a simple strap & clip mounted bike carrier for a hatchback.

Hyundai Canada has both options. Roof rack or hitch mount. Hitch mount is cheaper at $454.90 for hitch and bike mount.

that's a **** ton of money, over 1/2 what the two bikes are worth lol

i bought a non-locking hatchback style rack with straps that hook on the top, side, and bottom of the hatch.

i'll find out tomorrow if i can make it fit... as i think i may have to try to hook the top straps the the top of the "side pillars" of the hatch vs. straight up to the top because my car is a sport and has the plastic spoiler w/ 3rd brake light, so i don't think i can hook to that on top as the weight of the bikes would probably **** it up.

not downhill, obviously. hardtail xc for trail riding.

i just picked up a lightly used 2006 gary fisher cobia 29er in a 19" frame with rock shox tora & discs etc for $650usd. the other is my old '97 rocky mountain hammer race i've had for 9 years which my friend will ride.

plus i live in bc... no oil money, no prosperity cheques. :(

my bike was 4500. i thing your best option is to get a big blanket and take the rims off the bikes.

i think i better show you guys what i spend my real sporting goods budget on, just so you don't make fun of me forever.

my main lover that i hope to get with all summer long:

(IMG:http://kiteboardingkitesurfing.com/images/Rastaroo2007.jpg)

my back up lover for when the wind is lighter (i have a 16m, slightly different graphics)

(IMG:http://www.kite-outlet.com/images/spitfire2_large.jpg)

+ bar & lines, harness , drysuit & kiteboard etc to kiteboard here in squamish:

(IMG:http://www.nusalya.com/summer/kiteboarding_windsurfing_squamish_spit_bc_canada_jpg.jpg)

& i have another older surf kite, and 3 land kites (foils, non lei) & a mountain board w/ 8" tires for kiting on land/sand, and a couple of twin tip snowboards for snowkiting on frozen lakes/open fields.

i'm waaay better on a frozen lake or land than water, as water is the most challenging to learn... but this summer i plan to be up a lot more than the last couple seasons and hope to be ripping all over the place vs. taking short runs & relying on the jet ski taxi to bring me back to the beach lol but no matter what skill level, it owns so hard it's not even funny. absolutely incredible feeling!

carry on pedaling... land lubbers. :P

for xc, $6xx seems to be the sweet spot for a lightly used bike.

i paid $600 for the 97 hammer race in 1999, then folded the rims when i rode off a wall & had to replace them for $350 lol, and just paid $650 for the 06 cobia... well, plus taxes & a road trip and some other stuff. so, $1000 for each.

for the riding i do, that's all the money i'll likely ever spend on bikes and stuff. it's plenty good enough.

Bah, why not try a real sport like alligator tight rope walking?? Hahaha just kiddin. I used to ride street and dirt BMX. That was alot of fun. Gonna actually build another bike here real soon, so I can start tearin it up again. There are alot of nice street spots here in ALB.

just over $350 for this about 2 years ago.. gonna be gettin it muddy this summer!!

was actually looking for a hatch mounted carrier for it but the one i looked at, i didnt like the thought of attaching it to the plastic "fin" above the back window.. guess i'll be getting alot of use out of the quick release front wheel and stuffin it in the trunk!!

that's my concern, too. the spoiler.

so, i'm going to test fit it today and see if i can hook the top straps to the outside "pillars" of the hatch to the left & right of the spoiler... it might work.

owning an island would be sweet.

never been to port alice... then again, i haven't been to most of the island. i was born in vancouver and have been in the suburbs my whole life, but i've only been to vancouver island twice. just no real need to go there... plus the ferry is expensive to take a car on. (the better part of $100 each way)
