Hi all,

I just bought a '00 Accent GS I.5L AT. It doesn't get very good mileage, and I don't think it was very well taken care of by the previous owner. I plan on giving it a tune up (I've bought a new fuel filter, plugs, wires and something called Sea Foam.), and I could use some pointers on that and other stuff.

1) What is the plug gap? Will the factory gap on NGK BKR5ES-11 be ok?

2) I didn't buy a new air filter because I was thinking about making my own CAI to increase the power a little and help save a little on gas. I doesn't look like there's any room for this, and the filter is already away from the engine a little. Is there a better filter to replace the stock one that would improve performance and mileage? Or, should I build a CIA? I could really use pointers on this one.

3) Is there anything else that can be done to improve gas mileage? (I also bought new tires, I have the front 6lbs less than max, and the rear 8lbs less than max.)

4) Unrelated to the above questions, how do you point the headlights? There aren't the usual screws, and I read that it's under the dash... Any ideas there?

5) Any ideas or info for a new used Hyundai owner? lol

Thanks in advance!

I gapped my plugs NGK G powers, at .044. Everything worked fine just did it yesterday. my check engine goes on and off and it just popped on when i did the plugs.

I put some HID's in and didnt lower the lense, i am told u take out the fixture and there are 2 screws. mine aim high and **** truck drivers off.

Make a SRA, not CAI. It's cheap to buy on ebay then replace with a K &N filter, or just buy the hose and pipes.

I switched to full synthetic oil, which gets me better gas mileage, especially when i am up to 6k on one oil change.

full synthetic tranny fluid, cuz these cars tranny's cause bad mileage.

and info for a hyundai owner. understand the car might just start to burn oil about 110,000 miles, then die soon after. if the tranny is still good by then be happy, but expect a rebuild of the tranny by about 80,000 miles. beat it up and be happy to throw it out when it dies.

Well, I gapped the plugs to .44 also, and I made what sounds like a SRI (I'm not sure, and I don't know the difference between an SRI and a CAI - they seem to look the same).

In so far as the headlights, they point down at the ground, and it's annoying! I'll have to figure that one out after I'm done tuning it.

Well everything is done - plugs, wires, fuel filter, an oil change, sea foam (a little in the oil, in the vacuum for the FI and in the tank), and a short CAI.

I should get better gas mileage now!

I cant wait to post pics (it's a neat shade of blue - I've only had it a week, and I've had 4 compliments on it)!

Thanks gbajosh for the info!

Cold Air Intake, is a long pipe running to the bottom of the car furthest away from the engine to pull only cold air.

This is bad cuz of vapor lock and such.

SRI is just the short pipe with a vacuum hose and fliter, can get a little hotter than CAI, but you'll be better off since it's a hyundai and not a racing car.

If your lights aim at the ground put HID's in.

75 bucks on ebay takes 20 minutes to install and they make the car look sick. I am working on debadging mine and calling it a beemer :}

good luck, get some pics up!.

How hard was the fuel filter to change? I thoughts you have to remove seats and it was nearly impossible?

The previous owner had the car painted, and the painter didn't put the decals back on except for the H, so the car honestly looks like a beemer! I saw a bmw driving down the road that looked just like my car... awesome!

The fuel filter wasn't hard at all - I found the directions on here, and did it in about 20 minutes. The two tabs on the lower seat push in, the black cover prys up and I used it to hold the seat up while I unplugged the original (w/ towels under it) then plugged the new in. The gooey seal around the black cover holds it back in place and I tamped it down to make sure.

(I guess then this would be a SRI because it comes from the throttle body around to the space behind the battery (where part of the original filter was - I kept the extension where the sensor and vacuum line plugged in at, extended it further with a 90 tube, which attached to a filter - the whole effect cost 30$ because some one gave me the chrome tube so all I had to pay for was the cone filter.)

My SRAI...

I'll take a new pic with the updated wiring I did. This was as soon as I got the srai in

OHH

My ram air sounds like a lawnmower now :{

I think it's bad where it sits cuz when the cars running put your hand by the air filter. I noticed the radiator fan blows tons of hot air to the ram air.

I am going to clean my filter and throttle body see, if that fixes the nasty headache restricted sound.

I might do my fuel filter this weekend.

OK just went back out for a quick drive, air temp dropped about 20-30 degrees since my last drive, and my car been sitting for a few hours.

The ram air sounds fine now. I am guessing it has to do with the heat that fan pumps into it. :{

It's possible - mine is routed a little further than yours - behind the battery, and it makes a slight jet sound.

The original piece that has the air sensor and the vacuum hose is still there, then the 90* arm, then the cone. The original piece is flexible so it allowed me to place it behind the battery, and the aftermarket pieces for the sensor didn't fit the sensor inside, so I took them back and kept the original piece. It works great, and I don't get a check engine light because of the hose and sensor being in the wrong spot.

I plan on taking pics this weekend (and putting a CD player in too). I'll post them as soon as I have them!

nice, yeah i am going to get some pieces to make it stand a little stronger and hopefully a bit of a cooler area.

i love the sound it produces normally. today had me angry all day (I deliver flowers so i am on the road all the time).

My hose doesn't make the CEL come on either. If it does u can just plug both ends (engine, and SRA), and it will recognize the pressure and turn off the CEL.

I just used Sea Foam for the first time and it seems like it helped the car run better & smoother. Here is a video http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6187290865726229173 And here is their website http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpTechGas.htm I've had friends use it with great reviews so I decided to try it myself and so far it seems well worth the $7.00 for the bottle.

I just had a bunch of people recommend it to me if I was going to be doing a tune up. So that's what I did. Here's the thing though, I did all of the tune up at the same time, so I don't know if it was the SeaFoam, the plugs, wires or fuel filter that helped it (more than likely all of the above).
