First thing, have you noticed any problems with the car ?

Second, do you have a regular mechanic ? If you do, check if they have access to an OBD-II scanner. It's a machine that can read the diagnostic codes off the ECU in the car and give the mechanic an idea of what's gone wrong.

Let us know what happens next, don't just go replacing stuff at random.

Hey - no haven't felt anything out of the ordinary. He got a fault P0115 Temperature Coolant Malfunction. He cleared the fault and then it came up again when he cleared it so he said there is a problem somewhere there.

He did it free of charge (Auto Masters at Melville - Western Australia). Nice guy.

What would you recommend from here? Hyundai wanted $AUD 115 to diagnose a problem and could only see my car on the 15th June! FFS. Anway, at least I kinda know whats wrong now... what next doc?

Temp coolant malfunction sounds like the temp sensor connected to the thermostat. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this would affect the radiator fan ? When the car reaches operating temperature the fan may not kick in, or may just be running all the time ?

If the fan is running constantly, it's not such a big issue. Reaching operating temperature takes longer, and you do run the risk of sludging the engine if you only do short runs and don't change the oil at regular intervals.

The fan not running is a bigger issue, as you run the risk of overheating in traffic, or at prolonged stops where the radiator has no way of being cooled.

In the big scheme of things it's a pretty insignificant malfunction, why not see what the mechanic at Auto Masters will quote you to replace the sensor ? Or you could have a go yourself, track down a Grandeur being wrecked and hope the sensor out of that is a-ok.

P0115

DESCRIPTION
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is located in a coolant passage of the cylinder head. The ECT sensor is a variable resistor whose resistance changes as the temperature of the engine coolant flowing past the sensor changes. When the coolant temperature is low, the sensor resistance is high; when the coolant temperature is high, the sensor resistance is low. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) checks ECT voltage fifty times per second and uses the information to help adjust the fuel injector pulse width and ignition timing. When the temperature sensed is very cold, the PCM enriches the fuel mixture.

Well there you go, I was a fair way off !!!!

Since you aren't seeing any change in driveability, it must JUST be out of range. Otherwise you'd probably see a loss of power, and/or increased fuel consumption. Either that or you could be getting engine knock(or is it ping ? I just woke up) from the engine leaning out.

Montego should weigh in soon, the guy is an absolute demon with this stuff.
