Good afternoon, all.

I have a 2008 Elantra GLS with the stock stereo system - CD/AUX/XM. I'm not sure if this is a normal feature with the radio, but I've found that the volume levels of the radio will increase when the engine RPM or speed of the vehicle increases. When I slow down, the volume goes back to whatever is the original setting. At first, I thought it was a semi-useful feature of the radio itself - a way to help cancel out the road noise. But now that I've added an amp/sub-woofer system to the car, I find this "feature" extremely annoying. I'm also concerned about what is causing this "feature"...the radio or the computer within the car... as I may want to replace the stereo entirely in the future. If it's a feature of just the radio, replacing it will not be an issue. But if the car's computer system is controlling the volume, I'm wondering if a new head unit will also experience the same issue especially if I use the existing wiring harness. I can't find anything about this "feature" in my owners manual...and my dealer has no clue about it either.

So IS this a feature of the radio and can it be disabled?

Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to respond.

I do have heard about this feature, I do not remember if it was about another car maker but, Hyundai's are so well equipped this days that I'm not surprised about that.

p.d. Have you notice that your windshield wiper also increase speed automatically when the car speed up?

I haven't really driven it in a major rain yet. Besides...I mostly use the intermittant wipers anyway so I'd probably never notice the "speed-up." I can see how something like that would make sense especially if you were to drive 75 mph on the interstate in a typhoon.

I just don't understand the increase in volume from the radio. That's one of the reasons why I bought the Elantra in the first place....the interior was EXTREMELY quiet while driving... so I don't see what road or engine "noise" Hyundai would want to drown out.

Also...it would be kinda hard to try another radio. I'm afraid I don't have a case of stock Hyundai GLS stereos laying around that I can just swap out for testing purposes. :)

I must say that if this feature is available I would like to use your radio in my Lantra, because it isn't very qiuet car to drive  . Anyway I wanted to say that it's not necessary to use another Hyundai stereo for testing. Try to borrow Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony,....anything  . About those wipers: they do go faster up, but go slower down due to increased air resistance. I know many ppl with new Elantra models but none of them mentioned wipers going faster. Anyway, I could be wrong. Different markets, different packages (Europe, USA,....).

cheers

maybe I'm lucky... Here en Central America most of the car makers send the models less equipped. Luckily we do have the Digital Auto A/C, but aside from that, we don't have ABS, no ESP, no Rear Disc brakes, only one Airbag, all Elantras has no radio whatsoever installed from factory, only 1.6L engine. (Dealer give you a Sony or Pioneer). Maybe some countries or regions got less noise reduction than other and because of that they tried to diminish the outside noise with this radio auto-increase feature.

p.d. edit: forgot to mention that nevertheless it is a relatively not expensive car compared with Corolla, Sentra, or Lancer, it still seems expensive compared with USA prices, mine it the "full extras package" manual tranny, 14000 USD--- so go figure... and we have only one Hyundai dealer...

Here at Panama it rains a lot so I notice that wiper feature a couple of days after I bought it, But it is clearly noticeable when it is mist raining that you set the wiper to minimum speed, then you go faster it'll go faster too. Check the user manual and you will find it.

My Elantra has speed-sensitive volume control. As indicated speed increases, volume is increased. Ireally noticed this when I had some speedometer problems recently. The speedometer needle was bouncing all over the dial, and the radioo volume was going up and down with it. I agree on the quietness - my Elantra is very quiet most of the time. The one time I noticed it not being quiet was during a hailstorm. Not much sound deadening in the headliner! Otherwise, very quiet car. I thought I saw some review where the Elantra and Sonata were both quieter at cruise than a Lexus.

Hello!
I'm a new Hyundai 2008 Elantra owner (VERY pleased with it by the way) I noticed your post and I found it in my 2008 Owner's Manual on page 4-93, 4-98, 4-104, it's called "AVC" (Auto Volume Control) From the manual:

AVC (Auto Volume Control) Feature
As the Vehicle runs faster, Vehicle runing noise also becomes louder. To offset this noise, the unit has *AVC feature that increases its volume level automatically when the vehicle's speed gets faster.

I read all the audio sections cover to cover and see no way to turn it off, if anyone can help please let us all know!!
