Vehicle : 1999 Hyundai Grandeur (XG) 3.0L V6 engine

There is three devices(one per spark plug) that sit above the spark plugs on the front bank of cylinders.

There seems to be a part number c98-27300 on them, the number may be incomplete due to all three stickers showing signs of wear.

Can anyone help me identify what they are ? Will call up Hyundai spare parts in Australia tomorrow, just wondering if anyone knows what it is.

Thanks everyone, I'll also get a photo up soon.

they are coil packs, there is one for each spark plug, they generate a high voltage that allows the plug to spark

Thanks Montego, that's the vague information I had from trying to track down what they were last time. It appears one of the them is making a ticking noise, very distinct and you can feel the clicking when none of the others do it.

Are the rear banks also meant to have them ? On mine it's only the fronts.

I tried to use the HMA website to work out what resistance I should be seeing through the secondary coils, but no joy. Anyone have an idea what they should be ?

Across three individual coils I got three varying resistances, from a high 10 ohms to a high 12 ohms. The coil with the ticking registered the lowest resistance.

I'm trying the coils because I have a SEVERE misfire, it's ruined my fuel economy. Unfotunately we don't have access to a free OBD-II sensor over here in Australia, not one I know of. I've got no MIL(CEL) coming on, and without an OBD-II machine it makes it very hard to find out what the running diagnostics on the car are. I've narrowed it down to either a bad MAF or a misfire, I've replaced the spark plugs with bosch platniums to no effect.

Any help would be great.

you are mistaken about your coil packs, every spark plug has it's own coil pack so there will be three at the back as well.....you could always ask your dealer to do a check on the hyundai scanner and then give you the code

There is no secondary set of coil packs above the ignition leads, I know this because I changed out the spark plugs myself. Are they meant to be located above the spark plugs, or are they located off engine ? Perhaps this would account for the trouble I'm having ?

2001 has 3 ignition coils on the front set, and wires only on the rear. (stupid design) never again I'll get a V6 Hyundai.

Thanks Ramblemn, since the US 2001 model is equivelant to our '99 model, that answers my question. Hopefully my OBD-II scanner will arrive tomorrow and I'll have some more answers.

I bought this one.

http://obd-2.com/

had it for years, works for about 99% of the models out there, and it customizable.

OBD-II scanner arrived, at looks like a problem with the O2 sensors. At even the slightest hint of open throttle, the voltages on the O2 sensors drop to zero. Car isn't going into open-loop until the throttle is at WOT, so I'm assuming the incorrect signal from the O2 sensors is causing the car to run rich.

MAF sensor checked out too, got a good reading off that.
