After intentionally hiding my remote car lock/alarm fob for three years (to avoid an incident like this one), I found it Saturday and idly touched a couple of the buttons and was shocked to see the batteries still worked. I tucked it in my pocket for "safe keeping".
Fast forward 2 hours later after having tramped all over my 1/2 acre lot of mixed scrubby, unkempt rural spring lawn and woods to me trying to open the door of my car - locked. How odd. Unlocked with key - shrieking alarm.... what the?? look in all pants pockets for remote - nothing!!!
Long story short - can't find the fob after doing four slow CSI searches of every inch of the property inside and out. Plus, ever since I lost the frigger it's been pouring rain - probably doesn't work at this point anyway. Called my mechanic and the local dealer - both of them told me to disarm the alarm without the remote, I need to unlock the passenger door with the key - this did not work.
Is there something else I can do? This is, of course, the factory-installed security system. At this point I am game for clipping the wire that feeds the alarm, any pattern of key turns in the locks or ignition, reciting incantations, etc etc. Short of burning the car in the driveway for the insurance money (which is a moot point now that I've written it), or buying a new fob, which I am too stubborn and, let's face it, CHEAP, to do, is there anything I can do?
I just can't believe there isn't a simple fix to this that involves wire cutters....
:puzzled:
Thanks in advance. Oh, the car is a 2004 Elantra. Silver.

Sadly, this really doesn't apply to my situation because it's a factory installation and not an after-market installation. There's no reset button, no toggle switch, no black box under the dash, etc. If it were a matter of pushing in a button, I hope I would have figured that out on my own by now.
What I was hoping for was a person with a wiring diagram for a 2004 Elantra who could tell me exactly which wire feeds the alarm so I can disable it by disconnecting the wire to see if that would make it so I can start my car again. Or a devious and/or unfraid-to-mess-with-the-car person who had other ideas how to fix this ghastly problem. I am not worried about resale value, defacing the car, cutting or snipping - I simply want to be able to drive the thing again!
Barring that, anyone know how much a new & reprogrammed remote is going for in the US these days?

I've found these articles: http://www.commandocaralarms.com/wiring/20...lantra/748.htmlhttp://autos.aol.com/cars-Hyundai-Elantra-2004/expert-review''The GLS sedan ($13,299) comes with an impressive array of standard features, including air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks and a center console with armrest. For 2004, remote keyless entry and an alarm are standard on all Elantras. The security system allows the trunk or hatch to be unlocked with the key without disarming the alarm.'' Ask the dealer how much it would cost... cheers Mark

My remote entry went bad and I was locked out of my car.. I tried openning the door with the key and of course, the alarm went off.. tried to start it and the anti theif device kicked in and disabled my starter.. I went to the dealer and they told me I could disable the alarm by inserting the key into the ignition.. wait until the alarm stops then turn the ignition on.. wait again for the alarm to go off..count to 20 and turn the ignition off.. count to 20 again and turn the ignition on again.. if the alarm does not go off.. you can start the car.. if the alarm does go off.. start the process over. It worked for me.. this permanently disables the entry alarm so that you can you your key to unlock and start the car without setting off the alarm.. hope this helps
