The coin box has no lid to hide the money... not good.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/raw6464/IMG_0105.jpg)

A cheap and quick solution, cut a piece of packing foam a little bigger than the box...
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/raw6464/IMG_0108.jpg)

Fit it into the coin box.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/raw6464/IMG_0110.jpg)

Hides and keeps the coins from bouncing... spray paint it black first if you want.
Works till I find a lid I can install permanently

Who said it was a coin box? Anyway, I use the ashtray for coins - works great and they are out of sight. Lined it with a piece of felt, but probably not necessary.

I keep change up front there... only real option. Lining the ash tray with felt is a good idea, when I dropped change in there (that was my first idea too) it rattled a lot when going over bumpy road... got annoying.

Me. It's not a coin box? ALL my other cars past and present had a felt lined box that was called a "coin box" in the owners manual.

I don't use the ash tray because it is not lined and the coins rattling is very annoying and should not be on a $32K car... I would have to line it with felt as you do.. but instead I made the foam plug! I use the ashtray for $100 bills, they don't rattle

A good idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I, personally, use that cubby for my Motorola cell phone. The tight fit is perfect for my old model phone and it is readily available.

I always wondered what Hyundai put that funny little box there for anyway. My cheap plasticky Mitsubishi Eclipse has 3 nifty little coin slots built right into the center console box and even a money/paper clip under the console box lid where I hide my $1000 bills :bwekk: .....something useful you'ed expect to find in a much more expensive car..like...uh...an Azera for example.

Re: The pocket between the seat heat controls

We almost never carry coins anymore. Ever since we began to use a credit or debit card for most of our purchases we just don't carry much cash of any type. We use the pocket area for our cell phones or other small items from time to time.

We have a magnetically encoded toll tag for all the toll roads in Texas, so we don't even need coins for that either. I tend to collect what coins I do receive from an occasional cash purchase and eventually put them in the paper coin sleeves and turn them in at the bank.

There are probably as many uses for the pocket as there are Azera owners. :whistling:

I use the tray for change AND my cell phone...

Hey, our Taurus wagon had little slots inside the armrest for change.

But it didn't fit silver dollars.

So here's to Hyundai ingenuity!

Joe,

I guess you don't have parking meters? That's the ONLY reason I carry coins. The pocket has many uses, but there should be a closed coin box somewhere in the car.

Most of the time I have been in an area that had parking meters I elected to use a pay-for-use parking lot and used dollar bills. About the only time I have had to use parking meters was in downtown Dallas, and I avoid that place like the plague!

We live about 60 miles north of Dallas now and do our shopping etc. mainly in Sherman, TX which is about 30K in population. So far I haven't found any parking meters there yet. There might be some that I haven't found though. I don't mind walking if I find a legal parking spot without a parking meter. Not everyone has that option though.

I grew up in a town of only 5K population and so did my wife. We never really liked living in the DFW area that much. However, in order to have a decent paying job etc. we made the choice to live there at the time. We are enjoying not being in the rat race anymore!

Our daughter had a Taurus and it had the coin slots in the center console. I noted that the Azera did not have such a storage spot.

Your solution of concealing the area with a dark colored foam plug is a nice one. B) It keeps the coins out of sight and also stops the rattle. The old saying "out of sight out of mind" applies. Are your side and rear windows tinted darker than factory? That would also help conceal things inside the car. We had our car's windows tinted darker since the dealer provided that as an added incentive to buy the Azera. It also helps keep the car cooler on Summer days.

I think raw6464's foam block is a good idea, but like joezera, I don't have much of a need for coins in the car either.

In that tray, I keep my cell phone (it fits perfectly), a ball point pen and tooth picks.

I popped off the chrome metal trim for the ashtray and put a small piece of rubber drawer liner in there. Then put coins in there. Hey its even lighted at night. So Illuminated Coin Holder! Without the metal trim, its very easy to reach in and scoop out the hands full of change for the parking meters and for my McDonalds. Cell phones and wallets are what I use the center slot for. Then for Hands free cell phone (its a law in CA now) I got a Parrot wireless speaker phone. It is plugged into the power outlet in the rear of the console. I mounted the Mic/ button controls just behind the Drink holder door. I mounted it (since I'm from California) with Quake Hold (museum putty). It never hardens, is sticky but not too sticky. It peels right up again. Feels like Playdoh. But holds down the Mic element right in place. By the way, that power outlet is controlled by the key so the Parrot turns off with the car.

Joe,

No my windows aren't tinted, not really needed in NY. Also there is a law on how dark the drivers window can be tinted... cops don't like tinted windows. I don't know how much it's enforced... but then again the cops do come out of Dunkin Doughnuts every once in a while to enforece their tickete quota of the day? And then there's the yearly inspection the car has to pass.

I know how hot it can be in Texas, my son lives in Southlake... between Dallas and Ft.Worth, 100+ degrees is common.

My other cars have a feature when you press the door unlock button on the remote for a few seconds all the windows and sun roof open up. It works well in getting some air in the car before you enter it.... that's another thing Hyundai forgot besides the coin box.

I'm on the search for a piece of black plastic that I can make a lid for the "coin box" so it looks better. But the foam works, I updated it by sticking piece of the felt side of 1 1/2 inch black velcro on the top of the plug... it matches the felt lining in the box and it blends in really well .

We do have similar laws here in Texas about window tinting. The driver and front passenger's door glass cannot be darker than a certain amount. We told the dealer that we only wanted the legal amount of tint on all side windows and the rear window. I regularly see cars with much darker tint on their windows and they are most likely in violation of the law. Even the mild tint that we chose does a pretty good job of making it difficult for people walking by the car to see down into the interior. Of course if they look directly down through the front windshield they can see the dash area and part of the console pretty well. The tint would just be an extra way of keeping the coins out of sight. Your soft plug you came up with would probably be really hard to recognize with the tint added.

Good luck and happy motoring!

Forgot to mention. I took the ashtray itself out and put the felt liner in the box that was left. One advantage to the Azera is that it has several neat little storage places that other cars don't.
