I am thinking about buying a 2001 XG300L from a private party here in Ohio, USA. I spoke to him for about 30 minutes tonight. He told me that he has had it for 3 years. 3 weeks after he bought it, he had to replace the motor and the transmission. Both have 60,000 miles on them. Since then, he says there were no problems until last November when he had the alternator replaced. (I didnt think twice about it until I read some of the posts from 2007 <YIKES!>)
Anyways, the car drives very nice, the interior is in very good condition and, overall, it would be the nicest car I have ever purchased from a private party.
I didnt take it on the freeway during the test drive, so I dont know if it has the "frightening jerk" problem or not. Just the thought of it scares me! I drive to and from Indiana with my 17 month old daughter twice a month and a jerk like that is liable to cause an accident. Can anyone tell me how common this problem is and how much it would cost to fix it if it happened?
I would appreciate any input anyone can give on this car, it's pro's and cons and it's safety (safety is most important). Are there any recalls on anything? If so, will a dealership fix them for free?
Also, can anyone give me an average gas mileage?

Thanks in advance!

hello kyra and welcome to the forum. the XG is fantastic value for money and is normally very reliable. the jerking problem you mention (locking into third gear) applies to all later hyundai's but it is not a common fault, if it does occur it can be fixed by replacing the speed sensor(s). l have two XG's one has 70000 and the other 45000 miles and l have never regreted buying them. the only thing l would say about your purchase is that at 60000 miles it is due for a cam. belt change and this is quite an expensive job so check if it has been done and if not allow for that when you haggle over the price also check for service history

Kyra, I have a 2001 XG300, purchased about 3 years ago. It had some serious front end damage that had only been moderately fixed (and some of it not fixed correctly). It does have a regular title. I now am closing in on 90,000 miles. I can tell you I have been fairly pleased, all things considered. I don't know at all what that jerking issue is you are talking about. My car drives very well, as long as the tires are inflated properly and it is aligned, but that is the same for any car. I can also tell you the gas mileage has been a pleasant surprise, particularly given the size of the car. I get about 25 MPG out on the highway, and just under that in town. I live in Indy, and have no problems taking it on my work trips around the state. Hope this helps.
