Speaking of travelling costs, my wife says it cost us more in food than it did in fuel. And then there was the accomodation (motels) along the way, which, incidently cost more than the fuel but less than the food.

By the way, it's good to be back, for sure.

Bob

Bob, welcome back, that is great economy for carrying that type of load! when you left Dubbo did you go up past Lightning Ridge and cross the boarder @ StGeorge?

Lakes,

Went through the Warrumbungles to Coonabarrabran, Narrabri, Moree, Goondawindi, Warrick then Toowoomba. The other way would be a little longer as it is further west than our destination.

Was amazed out how the consumption gradually climbed from our usual 4.7 to 4.9 and then sat there, regardless of how and where we drove. Was expecting it to get up to or just over 5, but it didn't happen.

My CRDi SLX Auto CC has completed the first 2,761km at 5.1lt/100. The trip figures are not accurate showing an average of 6.4lt/100 for 31 trips at an average of 45.2km/hour.

The formula of course is total litres divided by total kilometres times 100 from empty to empty. When fueling up add the trip meters forecast remaining fuel kilometres to the distance the total in order to calculate empty to empty. So if fueling up at 2,845 and the trip meter shows 45km remaining to empty use 2,890 as the total kilometers travelled.

I will put a link on my JarrahBark web site to download a simple Excel spreadsheet which may assist those who want to keep accurate performance data.

That is an amazing average speed. Is that what your trip meter is saying? Based on many years of stats you would have to achieve top speeds in the vicinity of 140km for quite long distances to get an average like that.

My average speed was a lot less than that when I drove a Mazda RX4 Rotary regularly between Adelaide and Perth before speed limits. On one occasion I won a substantial bet in completing the journey in less than 24 hours.

Picked up my new SLX CRDi on Saturday - MIL (Engine Light) came on after driving 30kms, didn't worry too much about it, some issue with emission control or Oxy Sensor I guessed.. Drove to Mudgee (from Sydney) on Sunday - including city driving did a 600km round trip and averaged 5.5l/100km with an average speed of 70kms/hr.. but actually I sat on the speed limit (100-110k) in the country so this gives a good indication of the mixture of city/country driving - considering that, I think the economy is pretty good.. so in two days I'm up to just over 1000kms and due for 1st service tomorrow.. By the way the MIL went out when I got to Mudgee and hasn't come on since, nevertheless, I hope the dealer can shed light on what went wrong.. Love this car ...

Hi Foxy, i've done that run Sydney to Mudgee a few times but always got below 5l /100k, but i drive it like a diesel i don't rev it in the gears, also i have cruise control, i have never had that light come on with mine, no idea what it would have been but no oxigen sensor i can see but i have not been looking for one, did you see one in the pipe?
i love my i30 CRDi too!
cheers

The MIL problem turned out to be a code for the EGR, so the system took a while to reset and so far after another 1000k it hasn't surfaced again.. best I've shown on the fuel meter is 3.9lt/100 - a big step from my previous car averaging 14lt/100 .. and I'm getting used to the manual gearbox again after 8 years in autoland...

With petrol lingering around 1.55/L, and rising, how much fuel would you spend a week on a 2L manual SX i30? I've still got the excel, so fuel costs weekly are about $50. Anyone give me an estimate?

I think we can give you a more accurate estimate if you give us your weekly kilometres. I saw diesel at $1.59 on South Western Highway at Armadale yesterday. Unfortunately I had fueled my i30 CDi just two days earlier. My current fuel cost is $0.09km

Currently I do about 500km a week, even though that's with my excel, I would do the same amount in my i30 when I get it.

At $50.00 fuel cost thats about $0.10km so I don't think you can expect a dramatic improvement. From my reading any vehicle that is still around 10c/km fuel costs is just about as good as it gets other than motor bike, push bike or wheel chair etc. of course. :)

Jarrahbark,

I imagine you have done a few more kilometres since your last fuel consumption report. What has been your best fuel consumption with the auto to date?

I tried to talk my wife into going with a manual CRDi, but I have lost the battle and we will be going auto.

P.S. Does anyone know what happened to i30ownersclub.com (did someone forget to renew the domain?). Will it be back?

It's up and running now.

There is a posting saying there was an issue with a DNS problem (what ever that is as I'm not techi)

Thanks for that. Yes, I noticed it was back up at home last night. It isn't yet back on at work though. No doubt the DNS will eventually refresh and I will be able to access it here soon.
