QUOTE(tjaliwalpa @ May 24 2008, 06:40 PM)
Manual Owners

Has anyone tried this - thought it might be a good way to conserve fuel?

I have found I can start off at idle without using the accelerator (also mentioned elsewhere on another posting and I think in a review I have read) and even a change up into 2nd, without touching the accelerator at all is not a problem.  I have noticed that the ECU has altered the rpm in these situations - could have something to do with anti-stall programmed into the ECU.

What a great way to conserve fuel in slow traffic.  Probably has it all over an auto in that you don't need to touch the accelerator to get the car moving (or does the auto move off by itself if you release the brake?).

I don't drive a lot in traffic, but I do start off when the engine is cold in this way.  The i30 pulls out of the shed (gentle slope) on a cold morning in reverse then up our driveway in 1st before engaging 2nd and climbing a small hill without any trouble at all and without me having to touch the pedal.

No wonder drivers rave about this motor.

i do that in traffic too Bob, but everytime a diesel motor speeds up it injects more fuel to get it to speed up, but would guess it would be very minimal amount. it's a great feature, and what helped sell me the car, as i tested them all to see how well the motors pulled off with no throtle, as i knew this make them nicer to drive in traffic if they will just got with just releasing ther clutch and not useing the throtle the focus stalled and so did the mazda both had larger diesel motors too. at first i thought it was that the other two used high ratio first gear ratio's in the gear box and the i30 has a lower ratio 1st gear, then noticed if you drive without throtle and you go up an incline the motor will speed up so it does not stall. very nice.

Agree Bob my i30 does this without prompting it, however I have to put up with some nasties tailgating me when i dont take off like a rocket but their bad luck.

I have also found the colder the engine is the closer i get back to the 5 litre mark but if i let her warm up i get my 4.4 back cant wait til summer we should all be getting close to 3.8

I notice that most of the people posting re fuel efficency have the CRDi Manual.. Do we have any real world figures on the CRDi Auto?

I went the auto (still waiting for delivery) due to the wife prefers it driving around town...

I would have preferred the Manual but alas it was not to be..

Is anyone in the Auto getting down into the 5's??

Hey B-D

Sorry no one is responding to your enquiry RE: Auto Diesel economy the only auto diesel I know of is Tassie Dave (from Ulverstone about 20 minutes from where I live) I'll send him an email via this forum and see if I can get some feedback...

Regards,

Dazz

P.S. his email address is set to private so sent him a PM hope he gets it..

I know where he works so I can always give him a ring I guess...

Hi All, Dazz has asked me to comment on my diesel auto economy, As mine is a poverty pack (SX), I don't have luxury of trip computer. I am currently on my 3rd tank and at 1650 odd kms. Thr car came showing 1/2 a tank, with 170 kms on it. I filled it up and didn't take note of amount, next fill was just shy of 40 litres with 540 km for an average of 7.28 l/100km. 2nd one was a bit over 600km and 42 litres for an avg of 6.95. his is basically all city cycle. Ihad big plans for trips but haven't been able to follow through yet, will keep you posted, Also I may add that my last car was a 1.5 manual Honda Jazz and it used to avg 7.5 l/100km in same running.

Thanks Dave,

Just what the doctor ordered... slightly more economical than a pretty frugal Honda Jazz Manual (that's pretty good)

Rgds,

Dazz

P.S. Ive done 5800km since 20th march delivery!

Hello Dave,

Good to see that Dazz has an apple islander buddy, Tassies doing us proud on this forum.

I recently reset my trip computer and my econ now reads at 6.2l/p100 down from 6.5 that it has been reading for some months now. The car is doing 90% slow traffic driving. My Wife has it most of the time, and I am not game to tell her to back off the gas, so i guess overall i am happy with these readings. :)

I have had the car just short of 4 months and just about to tip over 6000k

Hey Eyma,

How you doing... Does the wife realise it is a 5 speed? I'm wingeing about 5.4/5.5 can't imagine how she's getting worse than six! Maybe you put the handbrake on too tight and she who must be obeyed can't get it off :P

Don't worry I understand how you cant say anything wife took me somewhere in her 6 speed Tiida the other day and was sitting in 4th at 80km (I just bit my tongue...nearly off) :whistling:

Cheers,

Dazz

Dazz,

You are right, sometimes a man just has to know when to bite his tongue. She does seem to keep it in the lower gears longer than needed, habit from driving petrol cars for years.
Still, we are getting pretty much half the fuel consuption of our previous car, a 3.3 v6 sonata so i shouldnt complain. :whistling:

She who must be obeyed in our household is known as the Government.

If I complain about fuel consumption there is a tax attached to that complaint which depending on the nature of the complaint which can involve: -

Visits to spotlight or certain girly stores to buy you know crate loads of stuff you dont need .

Remembering the last thing I forgot and bringing up at the most inappropriate moments.

No dinner.

No BEER MONEY.

To keep my sanity I bought a manual slx crdi cough cough and aint teaching her to drive it anytime soon im enjoying the great consumption.

Sorry guys just had to get that out.

ET, i found out the hard way what some women drive like, i made the mistake of offering my friend's whife a drive of my car while i was staying with them @ mystery bay. boy she hit the rev limit in 1st @ 5,000. and i could not say much as she knows everything :) .
Just makes me happy that my young GF don't drive or want to, and she does not care much about car's at all but she like's the i30.
John

I was engaged to a 20 y/o when I was 40 and ended up with a delightful daughter as a result (and a headache for two years....)

Enjoy the ride... :P

Well here are the results so far:

I've taken them from the i30 Owners and H-F sites.

The best posted was 3.8l/100km (74.43 mpg). This was for a manual.

The worst posted 9.7l/100km (29.12 mpg) but this was mainly town driving.

The average was between 4.6 to 5.7 l/100km. (61.41 to 49.56 mpg).

1 posting for a 2l = 8.03 l/100k (34.3 mpg) town/highway driving and AC on.

The average posted for auto was 6.95 to 7.28 l/100km (40.65 to 38.8 mpg).
Not all posted the driving conditions but would appear to be combination of town/urban with a few “touring K’s”.

One interesting comment was that when the weather was cold, consumption rises and 1 posting had:
Cold weather - 5l/100km (56.5 mpg)
Warm weather - 4.4l /100km (64.2 mpg)

Hyundai give the following for diesel i30’s:
Urban1.6 cdri Manual 5.7 l/100k (49.5 mpg) 1.6 crdi Auto 7.6 l/100k(37.2 mpg) 2 l Manual
7.2 l/100k(39.23 mpg)
Extra Urban1.6 cdri Manual 4.1 l/100k(68.8 mpg) 1.6 crdi Auto 4.9 l/100k(57.6 mpg) 2 l Manual
4.4 l/100k(64.2 mpg)
Combined 1.6 cdri Manual 4.7 l/100km(60.1 mpg 1.6 crdi Auto 5.9 l/100k(47.9 mpg) 2 l Manual
5.5l/100k(51.36 mpg)

(The 1.6 manual Petrol give approx 1.5 to 2 l/100k (14 mpg) less than 1.6 crdi).

Also, look at (I30dave’s correction s/b) ouri30 “Trip Computer Record” on http://www.i30ownersclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=38
and his average is 4.7 l/100k (60.1 mpg).

Overall most people are happy with the consumption returned and a general comment was as they drive further and get to know the cars quirks the consumption gets better.

Don’t forget driving style influences consumption. So if you have a heavy right foot consumption will be high.

Hi Eye,

Thanks for all your hard work...I would like to do a PDF summary of everything we have found from the forums that is not in the owners guide or on the Hyundai Website at some stage...

Just one thing...when i30Dave transferred all the existing files to the new i30 site they show up as his postings...you need to look at the top of each posting to see who actually did the original... for example that fuel log you put a link to is actually from "ouri30" AKA Bob... (thought he should get the credit!)

Thanks again...

Dazz

New record, just did 850km before the low fuel light came on, this is mostly running around town, using air con on occasion, no open roads.

My
