G-day guys,
Its good to read these posts to get a comparison with my own fuel econ results.
What scares me is that i dont seem to be getting as fuel efficient figures as posted here. I live i Canberra( Please dont hold that against me) and my best fuel run was recently on a trip to the south coast where i averaged 4.6lp/100 over a 150klm trip. I was delighted as this was a windy and at times hilly bit of road, admittedly though down hill most of the journey.Averaged5.2 on the return trip.(drove a bit faster, anxious to get home for a beer).
Around town where the car does most of its travel, i generally ave about 6.5lp/100. My wife drives it mostly (I get stuck with our 94 holden apollo) and she is a bit of a lead foot. I am really not complaining though because the car we replaced was a rather thirsty though beautiful 05 hyundai sonata elite 3.3 v6.(Hyudai fan from way back) Sad to get rid of it really, lowered with 19"rims, black in colour, it was pretty bling for a forty year old man to drive but we were flat out getting 13lp/100. So it had to go.
So we have effectivley halved our fuel economy but i still thought we might have got closer to the 4.7 that hyundai claim. The city driving it does is mostly through peek hour traffic and though no comparison to sydney traffic conjestion, its still pretty stop start.
Just for anyone who cares to know how the manafacturers come to the claimed fuel consuption figures. The car is tested on rollers indoors in lab conditions. The speed does not exceed 90klm/h. There is no wind. There are no hills or gradients. There is no weight in the car and no sudden inrease in acceleration. Little wonder the true results rarely meet the claimed figures. The reason they are tested this way is becaue all manafacturers are tested under the same conditions so an accurate comparison can be made by the consumer. Hyundai techs have told me that you should really allow 10-20% for real use. This means that realisticly, on an average cycle, one should get more like 5.2-5.7 lp?100.

EYMA TEAPOT,

There are a lot of things that can effect the fuel economy.
Here is a list of some things I have found:
* When engine hasn't warmed up, more fuel is used. Hence the longer trips, the better fuel economy.
* The smoother you can drive, the better the fuel economy.
* Driving down hill or on flat ground will help fuel economy.
*Keeping the around 80-90kph helps with fuel economy. I think Lakes mentioned he sets the cc so the engine revs at 1900rpm. I think that is about the best road speed in 5th.
* Driving when the ambient temperatures are down increases fuel usage. Someone else discovered this and since I read about it, I too have to agree. I can get better economy in the middle of the day than early in the morning or late at night when the temperatures are down. Bring on the summer.

I can get some amazing figures momentarily, but overall, if I really try to drive conservatively over a tank of fuel, I can get around 4.6 - 4.9l/100k

My thoughts and findings,

Bob

Hi Eyma Teapot

Have to agree with bobs comments im averaging 4.6 litres city driving thats according to the trip computer, however when I first got my i30 i was averaging 6.5. After talking with the dealer as this is our first diesel he educated me to not drive it like a petrol keep the revs low its not a Toyota supra you dont need to push it like a petrol if you can avoid it, taking that on board only ever get up to 2000 / 2500 rpm before i change gears. I also found that sometimes my foot was touching the pedal when it didn't need to be.

As the more miles you put on the car the more efficient it will get was what I have been told also looking at bobs fuel economy results of 1200km per tank is absolutely awesome i doubt i will get that around Sydney.

Also the 4.7 average is based on combination of driving city and highway so its easily achieved hyundai claim they have actually had it down to 3.2 Adelaide to Newcastle.

Dont get me wrong not trying to say your a bad driver its about how you drive it, the conditions etc
Danny

Danny, thats very important! a lot of people drive diesel's like a petrol, but the reason diesel can get better economy and last longer is they don't have to rev, leave them in top gear they will pull just go easy on throtle. when set in CC they would surprise you as can set at 1,900 and have it in fith gear and they just pull hills easy and stay right on the set speed as i check with digital GPS speedo. good for double point long weekends too.
i was happy to get 5.2L per 100k this week comuting in sydney peak traffic. could not ask for better than that.

Mornin" Everyone...

I think it was Bob who first made the point (and i wholeheartedly agree) that if you leave the Trip PC in average Ltrs per 100Km mode it actually works like an economy gauge.

I have definitely been driving more gently and feathering the accelerator more since i've had this feature. There is a real incentive there to keep that figure down (especially with the price of fuels)

Rgds,

Dazz

Thanks for the advice.
I wish my wife would listen but she only knows one way to drive and thats pedal to the metal.
I have found myself that i get best fuel economy travelling at Around 90-100 kph and as the needle nudges 120 the economy starts to suffer.

Will definitely have to try out some of those tips above. I'm generally getting 6.5 litres/100 average. All my trips are pretty short ones (20 mins or so), and I probably drive a bit harder than I should.

The lowest I've had is around 5 litres all highway driving.

Today the old trip computer showed 4.4 litres per 100 but i did a round trip up M4 came back m7 / m5 and the beauty is my wife cant drive manual nor am i teaching her.

Its amazing how women have the heavier foot. My sonata gets 8 litres per 100 when I drive it and she gets 13/100 city driving of course its an argument im not going to bother getting into with her remember guys " Yes my dear " is my only response.

There is always the pub to get to for a relaxing drink or my i30

Manual Owners

Has anyone tried this - thought it might be a good way to conserve fuel?

I have found I can start off at idle without using the accelerator (also mentioned elsewhere on another posting and I think in a review I have read) and even a change up into 2nd, without touching the accelerator at all is not a problem. I have noticed that the ECU has altered the rpm in these situations - could have something to do with anti-stall programmed into the ECU.

What a great way to conserve fuel in slow traffic. Probably has it all over an auto in that you don't need to touch the accelerator to get the car moving (or does the auto move off by itself if you release the brake?).

I don't drive a lot in traffic, but I do start off when the engine is cold in this way. The i30 pulls out of the shed (gentle slope) on a cold morning in reverse then up our driveway in 1st before engaging 2nd and climbing a small hill without any trouble at all and without me having to touch the pedal.

No wonder drivers rave about this motor.

Exactly.

I drive in heavy traffic for the first 3 miles in a morning, and the same final 3 miles at night. Such a pleasure to let Fergie purr along in 1st, with both my feet flat on the floor. The odd catch-up can be done in 2nd still without formal accel (which, as you said, seems to be controlled rpm-wise by the ECU)

I'm now off for a lengthy drive to (and overnight stay at) a wee village called Elsecar in South Yorkshire, where we'll be tasting the delights of English history in the Elsecar Heritage Centre :)

Hi Guys,

Saw two i30's on the road today a Silver SR (guy driving was too snobby to wave) and another Red SR.

Did a detour past the Hyundai Dealer in town as well and only I30's in stock were a black SX CRDI Auto and a red SLX Crdi in Showroom (closed so I couldn't see if Auto or Manual)

Mentioned on a previous post I was going to Buy a Manual Astra CDX wagon but they couldn't supply quickly enough so ended up checking out and buying i30. Interestingly Holden have made the Astra Wagon Auto only this year.

Rgds,

Dazz

Can you post your best and worst over the next few weeks and against each the type of driving i.e. town, motorway leisure, mixed etc

If enough enter details I'll collate and do a summary posting at the end of May.

Well nearly the end of May so it your last chance to post figures.

I'll wade thro' postings and post best and worse by the end of the week.

Not sure if each posting has indicated fuel - petrol or diesel or transmission - manual or auto.

If you can just check what you posted and edit that will be appreciated.
