My diesel i30 initially displayed 5.8L/100km when first picked up from the dealership on April 10. I decided at that time to not reset it for as long as possible and see how the fuel consumption progressed over the full range of driving conditions that I encounter. I found it dropped fairly quickly to around 5.5 L/100km after driving about 1000km in the first week, mainly on highways. Then it progressively dropped over the next 3 weeks to 5.4, 5.3 and to the current display of 5.2. The type of driving was again mainly highways with some hills and city driving included. The time between drops seemed to get longer, that is to say, the change from 5.5 to 5.4 occured in a shorter time than the drop from 5.4 to 5.3 and the drop from 5.3 to 5.2 took longer again. I'm expecting(hoping) the consumption will continue to drop over the coming weeks. I have been tempted to reset the reading and see what I can achieve in a one-off trip but I reckon that the best way to really test the consumption is to do it over an extended period and so I will resist the temptation for now and see just how far the current downward trend continues.

Hi tjaliwalpa... thanks for the input. Yes I am aware of what you are saying and I understand that the average is dependent on a lot of factors including the distance travelled. I will continue to not reset the trip meter for the time being because I am interested to see just how low I can get down to under these circumstances. But, as you suggest it may take a very long time now to effect any further change because I have already travelled a significant distance in the past.
Thanks again.....I'll keep you posted Russ

Well i have just over 1,000k now and had my first service yesturday, last friday i filled my tank to the top at a service station near home, i have done nothing but Sydney city driving, and my 88year old Father who is a great driver, took the car for the service, as i was too busy at work, he told me they did a lot of test driving with it, took it out twice to test, who knows why maybe they wanted to see how my cruise control works? anyway i'm just explaining this, i have the steel 195 15" Kumho tyres and have 35psi all round to cut down rolling resistance, the tyre seems to work ok no problems, ride is how i like it, the tyre has very open tread with a few wide groves runing in a straight line so less rubber on the road less resistance to rolling less friction but this is just speculation no testing other than checking they run cool. i drive smooth but have driven reasonably quick for sydney traffic i drive it like a diesel i don't rev it high. i have been useing air cond but not all the time. well i filled up today at same service station on same pump as i'll be going bush straight from work tomorrow to my GF's for weekend. i filled it too the top same as last friday, i have traveled 453K's since filling up and i got 23L's into the tank and its full right up i took my time watching foam like last time so i work that out @ 5.07L / PER 100K but will let Bob correct me if i'm wrong. now excited to go bush, will be in peak hour traffic from Sydney going down freeway M4 and up to Katoomba down Mount Victoria Pass this is high elivation so will not be ideal for best economy, then after that it gets better out past Mudgee, i'll be returning the long way ouy to near Dubbo and down the golden Hwy to maitland and down newcastle freeway to Sydney should be over 800k round trip might be 900. will then just drive in Syd till light comes on and see how far i get and how much to fill uip at same pump same servo. sorry for this long novel just like to tell it how it is. I love Hyundai and Hyundai love's me  John

QUOTE(dazzling_darryl @ May 15 2008, 04:21 AM) Hi John,
I liked you Novel (reckon it will be a best seller). Will be interested to see the result of you longer trip.
What did your trip computer say was your average ltrs per 100kms?
Cheers,
Dazz
Hey Dazz, this is an SX m8 no trip Computer that is why i had to make sure it was full both times on same pump same place as much harder to get accurate #'s without the Trip PC, but i have used them in the past and done a lot of testing in different cars to see what helps mileage, was thinking i could strip some weight out like rear seat and so on to help even more but won't go to those lengths just yet. if K&N make a direct replacement filter that could also help economy but doubt they would have one, if they have a direct replacement you could use it then drop in your stock one b4 services, bet they would be puzzled why stock was so clean :) could always say you kept an oily rag iover the air pick up lol

QUOTE(ozsnowman @ May 15 2008, 08:57 PM) I topped mine up tonight purely as it was payday. 326.1km for 14.58 litres = 4.47 l/100km!!! Admittedly mostly country running this time, but I havent been watching my speed or anything lol - I even filled to the second click as I didnt beleive the pump
Well, the guage didnt look right tonight, so I thought I'd go back and try refilling it at 187km to get it back to normal - and it took 12.5 litres for 6.44l/100km. My driving hasnt been any different so I mustnt have filled it enough last time grrrr

Oz snowman, it's very hard to fill right to the top, but Bob gave me a good account of what he did you have to keep watching the foam wait for it to go down and keep filling it up till full to the top to really check economy withj out a trip PC mate. i found the Cruise Control helps me as i was driving non stop for hours and set it at about 1,900 rev in 5th gear it pull's any hill i went up and some were real hill's too! now after my return i can feel it has more grunt down low pulls good lower than i thought.

QUOTE(dazzling_darryl @ May 19 2008, 09:03 PM) Don't stress...by my calculations if you add both mileages together and both lots of fuel then do the calculation it's around 5.27 still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (and about the same as my average) Yeah thanks Dazz, that number pretty much matches what i've been averaging so far! Yeah, I also think I may have grabbed the high flow pump by mistake too now that I think of it!
