Hi all,

Needed advise from someone who knows.

I have an '09 GLS Sonata and wanted to install on OE Rear View Mirror that has the homelink, Outside Temp display and Compass built-in. I have tried searching the forums for a similar install but couldn't find any. Does anyone know (or did they do it) how to install one??

Thanks,
MSKHAN

P.S: I have the moon roof and map lights in the car. So I was thinking I can get power from there for the mirror or not?

I can't be of much help since mine came installed, but since you have the lights and sunroof you may very well have the connector up there under the headliner somewhere. But that's just a guess. Maybe one of the Hyundai Techs will chime in if they know.

Greetings to the forum. We just bought a 2009 Sonata basic automatic, and I wanted the chromatic mirror with homelink and compass, but was told the only way to get it was to purchase the Limited version of the Sonata. Here in Canada the Limited costs at least $4K more and a bit beyond my wallet. I am a techie type and am interested in retro-fitting the fancy mirror. I'm not sure if it is available from parts dept but will find out tomorrow. Seems illogical that they would not be retrofittable - Hyundai is missing an opportunity if this is really true. We need to find out what is in the guts of the mirror. Some of the new fancy mirrors are completely self contained - all the electronics are built right in the mirror while others require external modules. If everything is in the mirror, only power needs to be supplied to the unit and it should work. Looking forward to more info and will pass along what I learn. Thanks. RickB

Hi Rick,

I asked from the dealer's shop and the person said that it can be fitted in my car - which is a GLS, but they didn't have the part! So now I'm waiting to "buy" the part and do the install.

:460: Hyundai - R u listening? I'm waiting to spend more of my money!!! Supply the parts to your dealers

Its not up to Hyundai to determine what parts your individual dealer keeps in stock. That's left up to the discretion of the Parts manager, but is usually based on sales demand. If they don't stock a part its because they don't have a demand for it.

If its the same Gentex Homelink mirror that we keep in stock at our dealer then its quite pricey, in the neighborhood of 1200 dollars. Don't ask, because I have no idea why its that expensive. Did they quote you a price?

Buy it aftermarket - not through the dealer.

E-Bay is also a source - I picked up a version from a Santa Fe ($75) for my 08 Sonata (no compass). Mounted with the original Sonata windshield plate, which made it easier.

Thanks for the links! The after market Genk mirrors look good.

It appears that you need to replace the existing mount with a Genk mount. How do you get the old Hyundai mount off the glass? The vendor talks about a button but I can't figure out what that is - have dropped them an email asking.

It looks like the wiring for the Genk mirror is really simple, just an ignition controlled feed, and ground, unless you opt for the outside temperature version.

Does anyone know if most Sonata mounts are the same from year to year - so will a mirror from an 2006 work on a 2009?

Thanks for info - you guys really save a lot of time.

The button is the small squarish piece of metal that is affixed to the windshield. The mirror bracket slides onto the "button" to hold it in place The existing mirror SHOULD slide up and the only thing that will remain is the button. Next, mark the outside of windshield where the button is. Makes it much easier to put new mirror in correct location. To remove the button, simply grasp it with a plier and rag and gently twist. Then you just need to scrape off an remaining adhesive and affix new button & mirror.

I successfully picked up an OEM chromatic mirror from a 2005 Sonata on eBay for $50. It has arrived and looks fine, but it does not have a pigtail cable. I have a 10 pin connector that fits but I have not been able to find a pin out diagram. I have scoured the links, and I thought I had seen a pin out diagram somewhere in my travels but cannot locate it now. Does anyone have the pin out information please? Thanks. RickB
