Evening everyone,

Im a bit confused with regards to how big the fuel tank capacity is.

Twice now Ive pumped just a smidgen over 55 litres into the tank, the advertised capacity in the sales and online brochure is 53 litres.

It takes me a while to fill the car because as it nears the top of the filler neck, the diesel bubbles up and I trickle fill it till you can see it in the filler neck and not overflowing.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

Was I driving on fumes?

Tanks are usually oversized by a few litres so a sufficient air pocket is left for expansion of fuel and for evapouration (less of a problem with desiel).
The 53l quoted is the "normal/expected" tank capacity.

Also, you need to add a few litres on for the fuel in the filler tube.

On i30 owners forum there is a posting discussing this:
It was estimated that the filler tube may hold 5.45l but as the tanks are oversized there is the space at the top of the tank to take into account. So given the length of the filler tube I estimate filler holds say 2 to 3 litres

Has anyone got a spare tank to test actuall capacity???

Don't forget, also, to allow for the pump being under-calibrated.

Over here there were [several years ago] a few reported incidents of retailors setting their pumps to the minimum tolerance permitted (I think it was around 3%). This was highlighted during the petrol blockade of Sep 2000.

My experience is that you can get more than the 53 litres into the tank. I believe you will find all manufacturers will never over state the capacity but rather understate it. If you read the manual, it warns against overfilling, but as eye30 said, the air pocket that is essential for petrol, is less of an issue with diesel. Remember, the manual is written for both types of fuel. If you know you are going to drive and use a few litres after filling with diesel, fuel expansion issues are not so critial. Yesterday I managed to squeeze in 54.45 litres and I estimated I had about 4 litres left, going by the trip computer distance to empty. It may well have been more than 4 litres as trip computers are usually set to ere on the safe side with distance to empty.

The over-filling of the tank could be the reason why some are getting incredble fuel results. As I have said before, the only way to test fuel economy is to stick to a strick routine when filling the tank so that you fill it to the same level each time.

Bob

And it is probably how they got from S.A to Port Maquarie on one tank :)

i did the fill to the top waiting for bubbles to go down then filling again so i can check mileage, as only way i know to get your mileage accurate is to fill all the way up, also the plastic tanks would expand some i would expect, my ute has a plastic tank i've been able to get 88lt's into an 80 lt tank on that Ute and drive 930k with a 330cubic inch 5.4L motor
