My experience is that you can get more than the 53 litres into the tank. I believe you will find all manufacturers will never over state the capacity but rather understate it. If you read the manual, it warns against overfilling, but as eye30 said, the air pocket that is essential for petrol, is less of an issue with diesel. Remember, the manual is written for both types of fuel. If you know you are going to drive and use a few litres after filling with diesel, fuel expansion issues are not so critial. Yesterday I managed to squeeze in 54.45 litres and I estimated I had about 4 litres left, going by the trip computer distance to empty. It may well have been more than 4 litres as trip computers are usually set to ere on the safe side with distance to empty.
The over-filling of the tank could be the reason why some are getting incredble fuel results. As I have said before, the only way to test fuel economy is to stick to a strick routine when filling the tank so that you fill it to the same level each time.

And it is probably how they got from S.A to Port Maquarie on one tank :)
i did the fill to the top waiting for bubbles to go down then filling again so i can check mileage, as only way i know to get your mileage accurate is to fill all the way up, also the plastic tanks would expand some i would expect, my ute has a plastic tank i've been able to get 88lt's into an 80 lt tank on that Ute and drive 930k with a 330cubic inch 5.4L motor
