The HP rating I got is direct from Korea. This reading might be in DIN format.
However, we may never have the track or chance to try and experience it.

QUOTE(andyman32 @ May 25 2008, 12:04 AM)
Their own marketing material has said repeatedly, in several locations, 368 with regular and 375 with premium.

www.hyundaigenesis.com  - "specs" section
375 peak HP (note: ESTIMATED hp w/ premium fuel)

http://www.hyundaiusa.com/abouthyundai/new...2008_01_08.aspx
368hp (ESTIMATE, presumably the regular fuel number)

You've read all the same stuff madderhatter - 368 / 375 regular / premium. Now the number is 358 premium. We lost 17hp. I mean, it's not to say the Tau is a slouch at 358 but presumably it'll be something like 350/358 regular/premium based on duke's latest tech spec sheet for Tau. I wonder where the HP went?

So we lost 17hp and gained $5000 on the estimated, guesstimated, projected price range of Genesis...

I think we'll just have to wait until it gets here and then see - on price and performance figures. Maybe before long someone will put one of the engines on a dyno, like HorsePower TV or whatever, but I'm not holding my breath. It's easier for them to go solely off of the manufacturers "estimated" specs.

While I've been preaching about getting a Genesis sedan since its inception, I think Hyundai is shooting themselves in the foot if a loaded V8 model is going to be in the mid-40s. That's not really undercutting the competition by much, if any. Case in point - I "built my own" Infiniti G35 Journey on-line and it came out to $40,925. Yesterday we went by the local dealer and they had one on the lot with the exact same options I chose (fully loaded except for AWD) with an MSRP on the sticker of $40,025. See attached .pdf if interested in what I chose. Additionally, the .pdf doesn't say what the packages contain that I chose so I'll state those too.

The Genesis has a few options that this car doesn't like a V8 w/60hp more, cooled front drivers seat, 6sp auto vs. 5sp, ... umm ... Then again, the G35 offers a few that the Genesis won't come with.

I know the track record of the G35 and what it brings to the table - including a 13.9 quarter mile and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, for the automatic. Of course it is 500 pounds lighter than the V8 Genesis. But it also has the Z-motor so there are upgrades galore out there if so inclined.

I dunno guys (and gals), if the filly is going to cost more than the thoroughbred I might be having second thoughts. Of course these are just my personal opinions and thoughts. I can only hope that Hyundai has the sense to make a fully loaded V8 Genesis available for right at $40k, $39.5k sounds even better since you're not in that crowded 40k+ market.

No, this is not a pro-G35 post. :)

It's good reasoning actually. I just read a G35 review in ... maybe Motor Trend. It was a close 3-series fighter... quite a ride from all they say, very impressive car. V6 vs. V8 is a purely preferential thing if the V6 still produces ample power to move the vehicle so aggressively, and the car still comes with all the right features.

I agree that the likelihood I'll buy a Genesis on into the mid-40s tapers off. Then it's getting lost in a crowd of pretty stiff competition for known, trusted and respected brands, loaded entry-level cars brand new, or far more impressive entries that are 2-3 years old, but under CPO warranties. For example, an '04 or '05 Jaguar XJR, low mileage (20k-30k range) with a 6-year bumper-to-bumper CPO warranty for around $35k. I was dead-set on Genesis when it was going to be in the mid-30s for either option; similar luxury & power, similar features, similar motors, but better warranty and maybe a little more curiosity about the Hyundai. But if it's $10k more, that difference matters for me (and for a lion's share of the Genesis's target demographic, I'm sure). The success of the model will rest almost entirely on the Mercedes & Jag buyers who are willing to "try Hyundai". Maybe their marketeers know something we don't, but I think the consensus is that folks are willing to spend $60k-$90k on a car and who who will nevertheless buy a car for its quality, regardless of the perception of the brand, are few indeed.

After the review I read about G35, I'm tempted to go test-drive one. After learning about this new rumored pricing of Genesis, that temptation is redoubled.

But it's true though :-)

I am kind of out of the loop with the Genesis, has there been anyone on this board who has driven the v8 extensively? Very curious to know.

A friend had a Camry with a plastic intake or something similar - it melted 3 months out of warranty. Toyota offered a 50% credit toward future work.
In looking at specs, I would go with the 3.8 with options, especially with Hyundai's low MPG ratings on its larger cars.
However, I will wait until 2011 out and all the tests and opinions are in. I didn't do this with the Azera and its suspension problems.

The 3.8L tech package is quite a good deal. Not only do you get the tech package features you also get the 18" wheels found on the Korean model. Just with Hyundai center caps. Always can swap those out with the Korean ones.
