(pasted from new members section)

Just brought a Amicia GSi auto 999cc 2002, I have high pitched whistle/hissing when turning corners or going round a roundabout, any ideas what it could be, one suggestion has been that it's the power steering pump under load, and it's
by-passing pressure.

Think I have found the cause of the noise, it's the drive belt on the alternator slipping under load, when I switched head lights on to check them today the extra load is on the alternator the noise was there, rear brake lights on when braking on roundabout loads the alternator belt slips.

I just replaced the alternator on my Santro at 79000 kms. I noticed the following symptoms for a few months:

- An intermittent screeching/whistling noise from the front right, which usually starts after drving about 100 kms.
- Jerking at slow speeds, especially in 2nd gear.
- Uneven idling with some shuddering.
- Finaly, a pronounced flicker of the headlights and dashlights with occasional coming on of the low battery warning light

I thought the screeching/whistling noise was from my front right alloy wheel due to overheating, but it was actually from alternator belt slippage. Upon seeing headlight flicker got the alternator checked and it was overcharging at 16.5 volts. Replaced alternator and now all of the above symptons have disappeared.
