I've posted in other postings that I achieved some 69 MPG

I've just remembered that the on board computer was showing 57 mpg.

This is a discrepency of 12 MPG!!!!!!!!

Also, the distance to empty seem odd and based on my assumed averages it would appear that I'll be empty but will have just under half a tank!!!!!!

How accurate are these and should you rely on them?

What are your views?

hey eye, from past experience with trip comp on other cars they are accurate, what you are seeing is average fuel useage, it is average for the total distance since it was last reset, if you have never reset it well thats the average since you got the car. it's like a woman, just because your good once, does not mean she will tell you. :)

:amen: to that!

I trust my little silicon friend when he says that Fergie is managing a full 59.7 (as it is now) mpg.

Oh how I wish we were paying Oz prices for our little litres. Dammed UK tax system.

Hi Lakes,

I copy your comments re average.

On this occasion as I was going on the 350 mile journey I purposely reset all to zero after I filled up with fuel.

All motoring was motorway, entry junction 1/4 from house, or dual carraige ways, destination right by exit junction after 175 miles.
Did not stop going. Only stopped once coming back.

Kept constant, dare I say it, 70 mph (+or- x mph, mainly +) UK legal limit both ways (shambles knows what I mean)

So average should have been around the calculated.
Do you agree?

Hi eye30

See separate posting for fuel economy. Bob has done lots of testing of the trip computer. From his and my experience the economy reading is very accurate but the remaining KM/miles reading is way out...under reads by a long shot.

Cheers,

This week I have been running some tests on the Distance to Empty of the Trip Computer. It is posted on the i30 Owners Club as well. It is starting to take shape.

Started on 10th April after filling up.

I want to see how the Distance to Empty adjusts itself throughout the period as the tank gets closer to empty.

Majority of my travelling is done on gently undulating to flat roads, with small country towns on each end of the trips. Speed limits are 100 kph and the towns are 50 kph.

Please note that the l/100k and the Av.Kph were not reset every 50km.

l/100k ....Trip ....to Empty ....Total ....Av.Kph (Notes)

4.6 ......1230 Distance to Empty registered _ _ _ _.

At this stage I emptied a 10l Jerry can of diesel in the tank.

Completed on 21st Apr 08

Comments:
870km is the maximum Distance to Empty I have had after filling up.
Note the overall distance for a tank (calculated by adding the Trip distance to the Distance to Empty) was stable at 870km up to just under 300km. From then on it has increased at a reasonably constant rate, gaining approximately 25km every 50km.

Over 1000km, the gradual consistent gradient of the figures began to level off (see graph) and I then felt I could see the point I would have to fill up.

From 1100km I decided to take readings every 10km. The fuel light came on with 116km to empty, and the total trip distance was able to be calculated at around 1260km.

I had decided to take a Jerry can of diesel with me as I knew I could well be between towns when the tank needed a little extra. I found it interesting that the Distance to Empty stopped registering an amount around 50km to go. I didn't want to take the chance of having air get in the fuel system, so I stopped and added 10l of fuel to the tank. It then registered that I had 254km to empty.

At the completion of the experiment, the trip computer showed 4.6l/100k. for the 1230km. I could possibly have reached the 1270km, but I didn't want to take the chance.

Graphed results: Attached Image

Hope someone finds these figures and the graph of interest.

Bob

anyone done similar comparison with 1.6l version? i wonder the trip computer can show km/l or just the trip to topup like the one showing?

Attached Image

i read the english manual provided by shambles, on page 4| 40 showing 'Average Fuel Consumption' and i tried to perform the said method to (press the trip button for more than 1 second, ...) my screen wont show km/l information. upon releasing the trip button, the reading jumped to next info reading like average speed.

the method work for other info like resetting average speed, tripmeter etc... but not the km/l info.

does any seniors here has similar experience? am i missing some tricks? :P

Impressive graph :) I have found that the average fuel figure is pretty accurate but like you, the ditance to empty is a long way off.
Those consumption figures you getting are good. I took my 1.6 crdi slx manual for a day trip to the coast last week for a days fishing. The journey started in Canberra and finished in Batemans Bay, a distance of around 150k. The road is pretty windy and there are some steap hills to negotiate, but i averaged 4.6lp/100. I was eastatic with that. The fishing was rather less impressive, or as fun as the drive up for that matter.

Python 357,

You can't reset the Distance to Empty. If you read the manual carefully, it says this in an indirect way. Provided you add more than a few litres, the computer registers the amount added and updates the Distance to Empty appropriately. So, in other words, if you fill the tank then the Distance to Empty is reset. The maximum I have achieved is 870km, give or take a few kilomentres. If you think about it, you can't get it to be greater than 999km. My wife got confused with the trip meter one day when she collected the car after a service and went to fill up with diesel. She thought the the service guys had reset the trip meter and had driven 66km testing the car as part of the service. In fact, the car had done 1066km on the tank of fuel.

I've updated the figures in the table above with today's records. Will do so with the graph when the experiment is complete.

Bob

Hey Eyma, :00000732:

What kept you... You were pretty active on the Caradvice website so I assumed you were on here and the i30 club site with a different name (as you can see by the number of postings I've been posting enough for both of us over the last couple of months...) :)

Rgds,

Dazz

P.S. Bob that school teacher experience of yours is really starting to show.. Multi coloured graphs and all ... inpressive

hi tjaliwalpa,

many thanks for the detailed example and i would post them once i finish coaching my wife on her driving...

cheers!

PS: i would normally dont top up full because i fear carrying extra 'weight' which i dont 'use'. i fill her up to half tank... any problem for such 'saving' method??

I figure you are saving about 22.5 kg of weight if you half fill the tank, compared with filling it completely. ( Based on 53L tank capacity and weight of diesel about 0.85Kg/L )

I found this statement on a website........ (http://www.eartheasy.com/live_fuel_efficient_driving.htm )
""An extra 100lbs (48 kg) of weight can increase your fuel bill by 2%.""

So, given all these things, we might conclude that you can reduce your fuel consumption by around 1% if you half fill the tank.
In the long run it will make some difference to the cost, but it will also double the number of times you must stop to fill the car.

Russ.

Hi Folks,

Just an observation, but most of the members on these forums who are getting the best economy seem to fill their tanks right up regularly. So it can't make a lot of difference to the equation (looks like Bob is going to crack the 1200km mark)

Cheers,

Dazz

Yep Dazz,

Should crack the 1200 mark tomorrow, but may have to fill up before it occurs. It will be touch and go. I know I would make it to 1200 easily, but may have to fill up about 40km short of it as I might get caught between towns. Will know when I get to work tomorrow morning if I have enough in the tank to make it past the 1200k. Will need enough to get to about 1280k so I make it passed the 1200k.

Does that make sense.

One of the reasons I fill up to the brim is I travel about 800k a week, most rips being just over 70k between towns (as I have said before). The extra weight is really no more than having an average child in the car with you.

Slightly off topic...

Im soo looking forward to the delivery of the Auto CRDi I30.
Just completed a round trip from Melbourne (outer North West - Sunbury) to Swan Hill and return in the 2004 AWD Territory.. It averaged 13l /100km for the 640 km round trip... Ouch!.. Over $120 of fuel for 1 trip..

Although the Territory is a good cruiser, will have to seriously consider a roof pod for those trips in the i30 (2 kids and wifes stuff takes up room!)..
Could save around 1/2 the fuel bill.!

I've come to the conclusion that most Oz i30's are auto's so the results are skewed as cars are governed as to speed in each gear.

Whereas with manuals which are the majority in UK you can push to higher revs in each gear.

Is that correct?

ET know the road well you would have used to the Bay it is indeed twisty and hilly specially near Braidwood.
this coming weekend i'm going to travel to my friends for the weekend about 80k south of BB. i'll be going from Sydney down the coast. but no fishing!!! :) :amen:
