So anyway, had an accident on the way to Sydney on Friday. I ended up rear-ending someone with all the start stop traffic. Was probably going at about 60 when i started the brakes and its my fault, not the cars but how do you guys find the brakes?

I find that it's not as strong compared to my gf's civic and my suzuki swift that had its brakes changed a few months ago..

and yes... i am CUT! :(

Very sorry to hear, chb :crying: Unfortunately these things happen at times. If it makes you feel any better, I rolled my first brand new car, a Renault R10 when it was only 3 days old and still on a cover note! Insurance company was not too happy.

Re brakes, the owners manual suggests wherever possible applying only a light pedal pressure for the first 1000k until they bed in. Don't know if the lack of bedding in had anything to do with it.

The closest thing I have done to a panic stop so far is when I put my foot down crossing Northbourne Avenue to catch the lights. The turbo really cut in, and I had to plant the right foot in a hurry on the brakes to avoid rear-ending the moving cars in front. I had the feeling then that the brakes weren't slowing me down as much as I expected. But I think this is because the car always feels like it is going slower than it actually is, hence the extra braking distance.

Hopefully this will be your last bad experience with the car :) .

Regards

Lawrie

hey LRK, hoping so too ...otherwise it handled the Cbr to Syd trip extremely well!
handling definately not as good as a Civic but can't complain...

Gotta watch out for those lights at northbourne heh, I nearly got caught out once when I first came to canberra, didn't know they did BOTH speed camera and red light in the same lights. Perth only does red light without the speed camera..which means yellow = go very fast ;)

you must've been extremely depressed after rolling your new car after 3 days haha, feel much better now

Yeah chb, I was only 20 at the time, had borrowed the deposit, and the car wasn't even written off. Best thing about the car was the motor which was unburstable even in rallies and hill-climbs.

I have quietened down a bit now, but still get the odd rush of blood on a winding road... :P

Cheers

Hi CHB,

Very sorry to hear about your smash. :( How bad is she damaged?

I had a really nice little fiat coupe when i was only 20 and my friend rolled it when it was only about 11 months old (he was used to a Vauxhall Victor with 4 wheel drums, was going too quick told him to slow down and he hit the brakes a bit hard - 4 wheel discs) We were lucky not to be hurt.

Ended up costing over $4500 to fix should have been a write off (never the same after that)

Cheers,

Dazz

P.S. I find the brakes pretty good. Wife had a couple of very close shaves in our previous 2006 Getz with ABS and reckons the calibration of Hyundai ABS is great - probably saved her life.

Sorry to hear that m8, no problems with the brakes that i have noticed, what is it you think was wrong with the brakes? as i have only covered 400k so far but mostly in syd traffic, you ACT boy's are a problem here LOL :) but your from perth so not sure what they drive like there. if you were useing the M5 have to be carefull in peak periods. but have to be on all of the motorways then.

ouch...if i ever rolled my car i'd be devastated, will probably turn into a granny driver after that :)

The front of the car looks good as new minus damage to the license plate(useful for something!) and i haven't noticed any scratches or anything else to the front but the side of the car has big scratches.....might put up some pics tmol or something

The missus rear ended me as well a few months back and same thing happened, the license plate took most of the damage and she had one small 1cm dent that was barely noticable on the actual car

I think the brakes itself are decent but when you press down it sort of takes awhile to stop...it's not like you press a little bit and the brakes hit you sorta thing....not too sure how to describe it sorry :(

Yeah...I was on the M5(well bit before it, b4 tolls) when it happened....I officially hate sydney traffic, how can you guys stand it?

Perth and Canberra driving is quite similar, its pretty laid back. I was surprised when i went back to perth on a holiday after a year and people let me cut in and let me out of spaces patiently without beeping lol

No prob with the brakes on my UK model.

As standard on the basic model you get ABS, EBD, and ESP.

M8 i'm an expert at Sydney traffic, sometimes even drive large trucks through it. No Problems if you know, what's happened with you is, you were used to the speed between Canberra and Syd on the freeway doing 120 i would guess :) and with that smooth Torque and the fly by wire i'd guess you could have gone even faster in some places but no worries. then you hit the Syd sprall, you need to slow right down when you hit liverpool as the toll always slows traffic, then as you are driving toward a funnel not a tunnel :) that has 80KPH speed camera's inside it. also they are the craziest drivers in Sydney that use the M5!! if you hit uneven surface and brake hard and you activate ABS it can feel like a delay on any car that uses ABS. just have to allow for it, and don't drive close to the car in front, i know they all drive like that on the M5 and thats why so many accidents on it, sit back and relax mate! you will get there and be less stressed out.
cheers

Shambles, i think what our mate mean's is as he had to hit the brakes hard if you do that then also hit some uneven surface the bake goes off, then comes on, it's just a normal problem with ABS brakes. and Australian roads ford Australia seem to have it covered as i have never noticed it in my newest Falcon Ute , but the Falcon Ute i had b4 i had it happen a few times but never had an accident just had that happen, but the newer ute has a different ABS system. once you know about it it is not a problem. look for a bump m8 then drive over it and hit the brakes hard see what happens.

Can't see that in his post John. I thought he was just dawdling along at 60? was it? I presume that's kph.

On day 2 of my ownership I was doing 40mph approaching a large roundabout where nothing usually appears from the right but that day an audi A8 did. Didn't see it until last second as you can normally keep 40mpg and swing left then right to carry on. I had to brake. Hard I tell you. Young Fergie almost put me thru the windscreen. I was soo (a) impressed and (b ) relieved.

To be honest with you, if I remember correctly, I was fiddling with the USB folder controls at the time B)

yep, sorry if i didn't make it clear, i was just dawdling along at 60km/h lol...i guess my issue/comment is that the brakes only really kick in when you push down hard..but otherwise they're decent.

I think Lakes is right though, i probably was used to the speed of the highway then suddenly going to 60 I probably didn't expect it to halt right down to a stop.. oh well live and learn! i guess its true what they say, never follow cars too close ;)

but i always think if i give a space especially in sydney, someone will cut in anyway!!!

CHB mate, forget about trying to stop people in sydney trying to cut in, just let them as i have seen more accidents on that m5 from just that reason, there are people that drive in that area m8 that are just crazy, i don't know why or for what reason but it is true, just forget about the time or how long it is taking, as have an accident and it will take you a lot longer. remember what i've told you and you will be right mate. different area's of Sydney they drive differenty. i could guess why but thats not my job  cheers m8
