There are 4 clips, or maybe 5. The cover only lifts up 5 inches or so, so it is a tight squeeze. The filter has a flange on one end, so make sure the new one gets put in the right way, so the cover closes.

I thought there were 3 clips as well, until I failed miserably trying to lift the top. I think you have to unscrew the two screws at the top of the box and you could also separate the pipe that goes into the box, which makes it a piece of cake to lift :)

Easy to replace the air filter.

But there are FOUR clips.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
> Unlatch three easy clips (see pic).
> Unlatch "hidden" clip rear left (see pic).
> Pull top of air box up and toward center of engine.
Note: you can loosen (not remove) the air duct screw to allow the air box top to rotate a bit - don't remove the air duct!
> Pull the front of the filter up and forward.

Install new filter in reverse order.

Regards,
GEWB

That was very nice. I printed those pictures with your instructions. Keep in my car for when needed!

Thanks, GEWB!

I did both my LX's about a week ago - there are definitely four clips as the man said. But, that said, it is not a textbook operation.

You have to use a little body English on the air duct and raise it just enough to ease the air filter out. Raise the duct too much and you've probably busted it.

And the filter is not symmetrical - note that one end is wider than the other end.

It's certainly not the hardest job I've ever tackled - but with a little better layout - it could be a lot easier.

And, they WERE dirty after only 22K miles.

So I guess this air filter MUST be purchased at the dealership, right?

And, as Borat used to ask:

How much?

Replace it with a re-useable K&N replacement filter. The K&N website can tell you exactly what part number to ask for. You get better air-flow, and for an initial slightly higher-than-cost of stock replacement, plus cleaning/oiling kits a couple of times a year, will end up saving on the replacement cost as well as perhaps gain a small bit of fuel mileage in the long run.

Hmm, the OE and the after market were rectangular not trapezoidal.

I get after market filters at Checker Auto - Fram CA10083, $14 or Purolator A35601, $15.

Your post prompted me to check the Advanced Auto Parts web site for a cabin filter. For months the word was "coming soon" but today it was there!

Changed it out for $16 plus tax (Purolator).

The old one was trashed after this winter! Hope to breath easier now...

GEWB
